New Delhi, Feb 7 (NationPress) Jay Shah, the head of the International Cricket Council (ICC), has sent his best wishes to all the teams competing in the Men’s T20 World Cup, which kicks off on Saturday with the opening match featuring Pakistan against the Netherlands.
The 2026 tournament, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka, will see 20 teams compete in 55 matches, guaranteeing a month filled with thrilling cricket action.
“With six different champions across nine editions of the @ICC Men’s @T20WorldCup, I wish all the teams the very best as they strive for the crown over 55 exhilarating matches in India and Sri Lanka!” Shah stated on X.
The tournament will commence on Saturday in Colombo, where Pakistan will take on the Netherlands. Later that day, attention will shift to Kolkata for a match between the West Indies and Scotland at Eden Gardens. The opening day will conclude with a match in Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium featuring the defending champions, India, against the USA, setting the stage for an exciting start to the tournament.
Matches will be held at eight venues across India and Sri Lanka, including: Narendra Modi Stadium (Ahmedabad), MA Chidambaram Stadium (Chennai), Arun Jaitley Stadium (New Delhi), Wankhede Stadium (Mumbai), Eden Gardens (Kolkata), R. Premadasa Stadium (Colombo), Sinhalese Sports Club Cricket Ground (Colombo), and Pallekele International Cricket Stadium (Kandy).
The venue for the final match is yet to be confirmed but is scheduled for March 8 in either Ahmedabad or Colombo.
Similar to the last edition held two years ago, with the USA and West Indies as hosts, 20 teams will again participate. The teams will be divided into four equal groups, with each team playing at least four matches against the other group members.
The top two teams from each group will progress to the Super 8 stage, comprising two groups of four teams each. In this stage, teams will compete against every other team in their group, with the top two from each group moving on to the knockout stage. The final four will then vie for victory in the knockout rounds, with the winners of each semi-final advancing to the grand finale.
