New Delhi, March 14 (NationPress) Anurag Singh Thakur, the former Union Sports Minister and current Member of Parliament (MP), emphasized the need for reintegrating former athletes into the Indian sports framework as coaches and mentors. He highlighted that the country is missing out on a critical asset by relegating seasoned ex-players to administrative positions.
Thakur voiced this opinion while speaking to sports journalists during the second day of the Golden Jubilee National Convention of the Sports Journalists Federation of India (SJFI) at the Constitution Club of India, an event organized by the Delhi Sports Journalist Association (DSJA).
“Numerous athletes who found employment through sports are currently working in offices, while many could return to the field as coaches or mentors. Their contributions in these roles could greatly enhance the sports landscape,” he remarked.
He also advocated for a data-driven strategy for athlete development, aiming to spot and cultivate talent from the early stages of their careers. “It is vital to analyze data and develop a comprehensive tracking system for athletes’ journeys, enabling early talent identification and appropriate support,” he stated.
