New Delhi, Nov 17 (NationPress) Former England cricketer Michael Vaughan has forecasted that the upcoming Ashes series will conclude with a score of 2-2, with both Australia and England securing two victories each, alongside one match ending in a draw. He emphasized that the team led by Ben Stokes is poised to claim victory in the opening match in Perth, particularly since Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood will miss the game.
“Provided that Ben Stokes remains fit, I believe this series will end at 2-2... England will triumph in Perth without Pat or Josh... As long as we avoid additional injuries before the first test, that’s my final prediction,” Vaughan shared on X.
Earlier on Saturday, the former England captain indicated that the English team holds an edge as they approach the Ashes opener, following the news that Australia’s pace leader Hazlewood is sidelined. Cummins is currently recuperating from a back issue, while Hazlewood suffered a hamstring injury during a match for New South Wales against Victoria at the Sydney Cricket Ground last Wednesday.
“With Hazlewood absent from the first test along with Cummins, it’s an early indication that the fortune needed to win significant series is tipping in favor of England. They have a substantial opportunity to go 1-0 up in Perth,” Vaughan added.
At present, Mitchell Starc is the only fully fit primary fast bowler on the Australian side, with Scott Boland serving as the backup. The serious injury to Hazlewood may compel Australia to consider utilizing both all-rounders, Cameron Green and Beau Webster, as fast bowlers.
With Cummins, Abbott, and Hazlewood all injured, uncapped pacer Brendan Doggett could unexpectedly debut in Perth. Doggett has secured two five-wicket hauls since returning from a hamstring injury while representing South Australia.
The Ashes series is set to kick off on November 21 in Perth and will culminate in January 2026, with the final test commencing on January 4 in Sydney.
