Worcester (United Kingdom), Aug 14 (NationPress) India’s talented left-handed batter Tilak Varma shared that his brief stint with Hampshire in county cricket has imparted invaluable lessons he will carry throughout his life. Varma's experience concluded with him being dismissed for a duck as Hampshire faced a five-wicket loss to Worcestershire in Group A of the One-Day Cup.
"As a child, I always dreamed of playing county cricket. This year, that dream turned into reality with Hampshire – my initial experience with red-ball cricket, alongside the ODI matches, has taught me lessons that extend beyond cricket, shaping me as a person. Thank you, Hampshire," Varma expressed on his Instagram account on Thursday.
At just 22 years old, Varma joined Hampshire last month on a four-match County Championship deal, having already made 29 appearances for India across various white-ball formats. He played in seven matches for Hampshire, accumulating 412 runs, including two centuries and two half-centuries, with a top score of 112. He also took one wicket in three List A matches.
Hampshire praised Varma in their post, stating that he brought more to the club than they had anticipated. "From his first red-ball century to his remarkable innings in our colors, he's demonstrated why he is among cricket's most promising talents."
“Beyond numbers, it’s Tilak’s character and warmth that have truly won over everyone at the Utilita Bowl. He has wholeheartedly embraced Hampshire cricket. We appreciate the magic you've brought, Tilak. Once a Hampshire player, always part of the family,” the club emphasized.
Upon returning to India, Varma is set to captain the South Zone in the 2025/26 Duleep Trophy, beginning August 28 in Bengaluru. This zonal tournament will kick off the domestic season in India. However, Varma may miss this tournament if he is selected for India’s squad in the Men’s T20 Asia Cup, scheduled to take place in the UAE from September 9-28.
