India pacer and Lucknow Falcons bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar has praised the UPCA Speed Hunt initiative, calling it a vital platform for identifying fast-bowling talent from across Uttar Pradesh. Speaking ahead of the fourth edition of the UPT20 League, Kumar said the programme has already produced tangible results — with players earning significant contracts and catching the eye of IPL scouts.

Speed Hunt Delivering Results

'The UPT20 League has been a huge success over the last three seasons, and I'm sure it will only get better. One of the biggest positives has been the UPCA Speed Hunt. It has uncovered raw fast-bowling talent from across Uttar Pradesh, and seeing players like Shubham Gautam earn big contracts is a proud moment. It shows that if you perform, opportunities will come,' Kumar said.

The Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association (UPCA) has drawn praise from Kumar for creating structured pathways for emerging cricketers. 'UPCA is doing everything possible to provide the right platform, but once the players step onto the field, it's up to them to perform,' he added.

Financial Security and the Weight of Expectation

Kumar acknowledged the life-changing financial impact the league has had on young players, while urging them to stay grounded. 'It's great to see young cricketers becoming financially secure through the league. Most of them have worked extremely hard to reach this stage. But with success also comes expectations. I hope they enjoy the moment, stay free from pressure, and continue to focus on their cricket,' he said.

Notably, this reflects a broader shift in Indian domestic cricket, where state T20 leagues have begun functioning as genuine talent pipelines — not merely exhibition tournaments.

UPT20 as an IPL Launchpad

'State leagues have become a big source of motivation for young cricketers. Earlier, opportunities were limited, but now hundreds of players get a chance to showcase their talent. We've already seen players go straight from the UPT20 League to the IPL. That itself is the biggest motivation for every youngster,' Kumar said.

This comes amid growing recognition across Indian cricket that state leagues are filling a structural gap between domestic red-ball cricket and the IPL — a pathway that previously did not exist for players outside the established Ranji circuit.

Fourth Edition: Lucknow and Kanpur to Host

The fourth edition of the UPT20 League will be staged across two venues — the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow and Green Park Stadium in Kanpur. Kumar welcomed the two-city format. 'Uttar Pradesh is a huge state, and taking matches to different venues helps fans connect with their teams. It will only increase the popularity of the tournament,' he said.

The opening ceremony and first phase will be held in Lucknow. Kanpur will host the second phase, including the playoffs and the final. Qualifier 1 and the Eliminator are scheduled for 3 September, Qualifier 2 on 4 September, and the grand final on 6 September. The 24-day tournament will feature 34 matches, including 13 double-header days and 8 single-header matchdays.
