New Delhi, Jan 25 (NationPress) In a crucial turn of events that could have extensive repercussions for wrestling in India, the United World Wrestling (UWW), the global authority for the sport, has issued a serious warning to India about political interference in the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI).
UWW president Nenad Lalovic conveyed in a letter to WFI president, Sanjay Singh, the critical need for the federation’s autonomy, emphasizing that any political or public intrusion into its internal operations is against the UWW Constitution and the Olympic Charter.
Lalovic pointed out that the independence of national federations is vital for their effective operation and representation in global wrestling competitions. While monitoring public funding is permissible, any interference beyond this could endanger the federation’s standing.
The communication from UWW warned that the WFI could face suspension if external interference persists. WFI president Singh confirmed this message to IANS, stating, “Indeed, the world wrestling body (UWW) has cautioned us about a potential suspension of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) if there is any intrusion by public and political entities into the internal matters of the WFI. The letter has been forwarded to the IOA, which will present it in court,” said Sanjay Singh to IANS.
This warning arises amid considerable turmoil within the WFI. Following its elections in December 2023, the federation was suspended by India’s Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, leading to a wave of legal and administrative challenges.
The suspension and ensuing legal disputes nearly hindered Indian wrestlers from competing in the World Championship, with uncertainty lingering until the Sports Ministry opted to assess the suspension. This decision came after a court order mandated clarification and reinstatement of an ad-hoc panel - a decision initially met with resistance from the Indian Olympic Association (IOA).
In the midst of the controversy, the government appointed WFI president Sanjay Singh as the federation’s official representative for negotiations. The government's involvement was intended to resolve issues raised by UWW and ensure compliance with international norms while addressing domestic challenges.
The warning from UWW has profound implications for wrestling in India. A suspension of the WFI could result in severe consequences, including preventing Indian wrestlers from competing in international events under the national banner.
