New Delhi, June 28 (NationPress) The highly anticipated first season of the Shooting League of India is gearing up to launch this year in New Delhi. This initiative aims to propel shooting further into both the Indian and global mainstream, enhancing visibility for shooters. The excitement surrounding the tournament is palpable, with over 400 athletes from India and around the globe registered to compete in this inaugural event.
Renowned Indian shooter Varun Tomar, a gold medalist at the 2022 ISSF World Cup held in Cairo, is poised to be a standout competitor in this tournament. Recognized as one of India's top young shooters, he played a pivotal role in securing a quota for India at the 2024 Paris Olympics by clinching a gold medal in the 10m air pistol event during the Asian Olympics Qualifiers in Jakarta.
Tomar expressed his enthusiasm for the league, highlighting the increased exposure it would afford to shooters. He stated, “This will allow people to get to know us and our personalities better, similar to how athletes from other sports like Neeraj Chopra have gained recognition.”
He also conveyed his excitement about competing in front of an Indian audience, saying, “Playing before my own people evokes a unique feeling, demanding a different mindset and mentality. There’s an added desire to excel in such an environment.”
When asked about the pressure of competing in India, he responded, “Not pressure, but enthusiasm.”
The 21-year-old hopes the league will broaden the shooting community, stating, “Shooting is a fantastic sport. India has developed a strong shooting program, and the public enjoys following our successes. This league will provide a great opportunity for greater understanding and popularity of the sport. Increased participation will elevate competition within India.”
The Indian contingent recently performed remarkably at the 2025 ISSF World Cup in Munich, securing four medals – two gold and two bronze, finishing third in the overall medal standings, just behind China and Norway.
He elaborated on the positive atmosphere within the shooting community regarding the league, noting, “The environment is uplifting, and there’s a sense of excitement as we look forward to proving ourselves in the league following the World Cups.”
Tomar concluded by discussing the transformative impact of the league on shooting culture, stating, “We participate in numerous World Cups and Championships, but the league introduces a new format and selection policies. It promises to be a unique experience, and we are all eager for the challenge.”
