New Delhi, Jan 2 (NationPress) Niraj Kumar, an Indian shooter and World Cup gold medallist, recently expressed his belief that the forthcoming Shooting League of India (SLI) will significantly enhance the sport's landscape in the country by fostering a better understanding and appreciation among the public.

Niraj, who showcased an impressive performance at the 68th National Shooting Championships in Bhopal, clinching a silver medal in the Men’s 50m 3P category, reflected on his professional journey and the anticipated Shooting League of India (SLI).

Kumar’s ascent from a modest border town in Hoshiarpur district, Punjab to the national stage illustrates the determination needed in elite sports. His journey commenced in 2014 through the National Cadet Corps (NCC), where he faced significant financial challenges and spent years persuading his parents to endorse his shooting career. His eventual selection for the Indian Navy marked a turning point, gaining his family's support for his aspirations.

With the introduction of the SLI, Kumar is optimistic that younger athletes will encounter fewer hurdles. He believes the league will instill confidence in parents to regard shooting as a legitimate and promising career choice for their children.

“Families typically encourage children to pursue a sport only after witnessing successful examples in that field. The Shooting League of India will help create those success stories for the public. Audiences will enjoy the format and start recognizing the future prospects this sport provides,” Kumar noted.

“Currently, our audience primarily consists of those already familiar with or engaged in shooting. However, with the league's broadcasts, a broader audience will have the chance to discover and appreciate the sport,” he added.

A major highlight for Kumar is the league’s potential to connect domestic athletes with international icons. He expressed enthusiasm for the opportunity to train and compete alongside global stars, specifically mentioning Hungarian World Champion István Peni and his Indian teammate Kiran Jadhav.

“I am thrilled at the prospect of shooting alongside Hungarian athlete István Péni and my teammate Kiran Jadhav. It would be even more exciting if we could team up,” Kumar shared.

Reflecting on his recent success at the national level and his preparation journey, Kumar praised the infrastructure provided at national training centers.

“I did not adhere to a specific regimen for the national championships. However, the facilities at the Dr. Karni Singh Shooting Range, where I train, are exceptional. We are offered hostel accommodations and three meals daily. Additionally, we receive training ammunition, which is a significant benefit,” he stated.

Despite the fierce competition among Indian shooters at national and international events, Kumar emphasized that athletes maintain a clear distinction between professional rivalries and personal friendships by concentrating on their individual performances.

“Since shooting is an individual sport, we focus on our own targets and personal challenges rather than on each other. This is a positive aspect of our discipline,” he remarked. He added, “So we meet, socialize, and everything goes smoothly. There is a positive atmosphere at the range.”

As he gears up for the 2026 season, Kumar remains steadfast in his primary goal of winning an Olympic medal. He perceives the Shooting League of India not just as a competition, but as a high-stakes environment that will encourage every athlete to elevate their performance while simultaneously fostering audience support for the sport.
