Vishwa Fernando Signs with Warwickshire for 2025 County Championship

Birmingham, Jan 28 (NationPress) Sri Lankan left-arm seamer Vishwa Fernando is poised to enhance Warwickshire's pace attack during the initial phase of the 2025 County Championship. The seasoned Test bowler, who has taken 79 wickets in the longest format, will don the Bears' colors in their Division One matches this April.

Fernando’s international and county experience makes him a significant asset. He shone during his three-match tenure with Yorkshire last summer, taking 17 wickets, which included a remarkable nine-wicket haul against Derbyshire. His performances have solidified his presence on the international stage, notably contributing to Sri Lanka's Test victory over England at The Kia Oval. The left-arm quick expressed his excitement about joining Warwickshire, stating, "I am thrilled to be joining Warwickshire for the early stages of the season. Playing county cricket has been hugely enjoyable for me over the last two years."

Fernando commended the club’s talent and team spirit, remarking, "The county has some very good cricketers, and I look forward to playing alongside Alex Davies, Ed Barnard, and the rest of the team. I always give 100 percent on the field, and the loyal Bears fans will receive my heart and soul every day I am there."

He also expressed appreciation to Sri Lanka Cricket for this opportunity and to Warwickshire head coach Mark Robinson for believing in his capabilities.

Fernando’s addition strengthens Warwickshire’s roster, complementing an already impressive lineup for the season. Pakistan pacer Hasan Ali returns to Edgbaston for his third consecutive year, alongside Australia’s all-rounder Beau Webster, New Zealand Test captain Tom Latham, and former Middlesex fast bowler Ethan Bamber.

Robinson, Warwickshire's first-team coach, emphasized Fernando’s ability to bring diversity and enhance the bowling attack. "We are thrilled to have secured Vishwa for the first three rounds of the County Championship. He’s a proven international bowler and, as a left-armer, will provide great variation to our attack." Robinson also highlighted Fernando’s success with Yorkshire as a promising indicator of his potential impact at Warwickshire. "He performed well for Yorkshire last season in a short stint, took plenty of wickets, and we anticipate he can help us start this campaign strong."

Fernando is set to make his debut in Warwickshire’s season opener against Sussex on April 4. He will also participate in key matches, including a clash with his former club, Durham, and a home game against Nottinghamshire starting on April 18.
