Wayne Rooney Dismissed by Plymouth Argyle Amidst League Struggles

Plymouth, Dec 31 (NationPress) Wayne Rooney, the celebrated England and Manchester United icon, has been dismissed from his role as Head Coach of Plymouth Argyle after the club languished in 24th place on the Championship league table.

Alongside Rooney, Assistant Head Coach Mike Phelan and first team coach Simon Ireland are also set to leave the club. The team will now be led by first team coach Kevin Nancekivell, with club captain Joe Edwards taking charge for the upcoming match against Bristol City on Wednesday.

“I want to express my gratitude to the Board of Plymouth Argyle Football Club, especially Simon Hallett and Neil Dewsnip, with whom I have had wonderful relationships. I also thank all the staff who made me feel at home and contributed to making this club a remarkable place, as well as the players and fans for their unwavering support during my tenure as Head Coach. I wish everyone the best in the future,” said Rooney in a statement.

“To the Green Army, thank you for creating unforgettable memories at Home Park. These moments will stay with us forever.

“I must also recognize my coaching staff, Kevin Nancekivell, Simon Ireland, Darryl Flahavan, and Mike Phelan, for their expertise, commitment, and support. Plymouth Argyle will always hold a special place in my heart, and I will continue to follow their progress closely,” Rooney added.

Rooney's managerial journey has been fraught with challenges. He started as a caretaker manager at Derby County before becoming their permanent head coach. After 73 matches with an average of 1.14 points per game, he resigned amid financial troubles surrounding the club.

Following his stint in England, he took the helm at D.C. United in the USA, but his time there was also brief, leading to a mutual parting of ways.

Before his appointment at Plymouth Argyle, Rooney managed Birmingham City for 15 matches, achieving only two wins, four draws, and nine losses before his dismissal.

Currently, Plymouth Argyle sits at the bottom of the EFL Championship table with four victories, six draws, and 13 losses in 23 games played this season.

“Plymouth Argyle can confirm that the club and Head Coach Wayne Rooney have mutually agreed to part ways with immediate effect. Along with Rooney, Assistant Head Coach Mike Phelan and first team coach Simon Ireland will also depart. We thank Wayne and his staff for their contributions and wish them success in the future. The club will provide updates on the new first team management staff in due course,” stated the club.
