New Delhi, Feb 11 (NationPress) Tiger Woods has announced he will not be participating in this week’s The Genesis Invitational, an event he hosts, citing he is "still processing" the loss of his mother.
"I intended to play this week, but I’m just not ready," Woods stated, referring to his mother Kultida, who passed away last week at the age of 80. "I prepared as best as I could, knowing it’s what my Mom would have wanted, but I’m still coming to terms with her loss.
"I appreciate everyone who has reached out. I hope to be at Torrey later this week and am grateful for the ongoing support since my Mom’s passing," Woods shared via social media.
Jake Knapp will take Woods' place in the tournament. Knapp's earliest memory of golf is watching Woods defeat Stephen Ames, 9 and 8, at the 2006 WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship, where he received a ball from Woods' caddie, Steve Williams.
Woods’ last appearance on the PGA Tour was at The 2024 Open Championship at Royal Troon Golf Club, where he missed the cut. This year, he has played twice at Jupiter Links Golf Club in the new tech-savvy TGL golf league, co-founded by him, Rory McIlroy, and Mike McCarley.
The 49-year-old also participated in a 36-hole event with his teenage son Charlie in December.
The Genesis Invitational, commencing Thursday, supports Woods' TGR Foundation. Originally set to take place at the Riviera Country Club, it was moved to Torrey Pines in San Diego due to the wildfires in Los Angeles.
The tournament, hosted by Tiger Woods, features many top players, including world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and the latest Signature Event champion Rory McIlroy.
