Vadodara, Jan 25 (NationPress) Nandni Sharma, the fast-bowler for Delhi Capitals, has attributed her smooth transition into the inaugural season of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) to the supportive and serene atmosphere within the team. She emphasized that the encouragement from senior players has been instrumental in alleviating her nerves and enhancing her confidence.
In a video released by the WPL on social media, Nandni candidly discussed her pre-match jitters, her personal superstitions, and the comfort she derives from her teammates, which she believes have allowed her to focus more on relishing the game rather than succumbing to the pressures of her debut season.
"Yes, I have a superstition. I wore a kukli during my warm-up. But I don’t wear it in the match. I won’t tell you why," she mentioned.
The young pacer acknowledged that feeling nervous is a constant before each game, yet the team’s environment ensures she never feels isolated.
"I get nervous before every match. However, my teammates cheer me up and provide immense support. They help me stay calm, which is very beneficial for me. Our team environment is incredibly positive and tranquil. We support each other extensively, and I truly enjoy it," she stated.
Nandni noted how seasoned players like Marizanne Kapp routinely guide her on match conditions, especially regarding pitch reading and field placements.
"They consistently inform me about the pitch before every match. They guide me on where to place the ball because of their extensive knowledge, and I greatly benefit from their advice. They always remind me to ‘touch wood’ before matches. I feel optimistic about my future," she added.
This right-arm pacer also mentioned numerous teammates who have contributed to her comfort and confidence throughout the season, ensuring she never feels the weight of being a newcomer.
"I have immense trust in my team. Whenever I feel anxious, I reach out to them. They are very laid-back: Shivali, Jamie, Tanya, Meenu, and Kapi. Their support is invaluable and makes me forget that it’s my first season," she shared.
South African all-rounder Kapp praised Nandni’s bowling and imparted crucial advice to the young talent. "There’s a lot to appreciate about bowling. In the women’s game, the days where one is solely a bowler are over. Nowadays, if teams have to choose between two bowlers with similar stats, they will likely favor the one who is proficient in fielding and batting," Kapp said.
"So, during the off-season, I advised her to continue honing her batting and fielding skills. Her bowling is already exceptional, and I believe she has a bright future ahead of her," she added.
In her debut season, Nandni has claimed 13 wickets in just 6 matches, making her the current purple cap holder for the most wickets in the season. She has also achieved a hat trick against the Gujarat Giants.
