IPL 2026: Yash Thakur Emphasizes Clarity and Strategy for Success in Death Overs with PBKS
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 25 (NationPress) When Yash Thakur discusses his role in the death overs during T20 matches, he prioritizes mental clarity and strategic planning before focusing on execution. This approach is reflective of his standing as a specialist in end-overs bowling in the IPL, with 13 out of his 25 wickets being taken in the critical 17-20 overs.
“I consider the death overs to be the most demanding part of the game. Therefore, I always strive to deliver my best for the team in these high-pressure situations. My mental approach remains consistent, which is why I prefer to bowl during these crucial phases. For the death overs, having a clear mind and well-defined plans is essential,” Thakur shared in an exclusive interview with IANS ahead of the commencement of IPL 2026 on March 28.
Thakur's emphasis on clarity and execution has been instrumental in his success, especially after his impactful seasons with the Lucknow Super Giants in 2023 and 2024. Although he participated in only two matches with PBKS during the 2025 season, his recent domestic performance, where he claimed 18 wickets in seven matches at an economy rate of 6.8 in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, indicates he is primed for a more significant role.
His economy rate ranked third among pacers who bowled at least 25 overs in the domestic T20 tournament, alongside 19 wickets in nine outings leading Vidarbha to victory in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Thakur understands the importance of these statistics as he sets his sights on IPL 2026, particularly with PBKS aiming to rectify last year's near-miss in the title race.
“From day one, I am ready to compete in matches. The tactical decisions made by the team will always take precedence. Regardless of the role I am assigned, I will dedicate myself to the team, which is of utmost importance. The only goal for Punjab Kings this season is to secure the championship trophy that eluded us last year,” he stated.
Thakur's evolution as a death overs specialist began during his tenure with the India U19 team in 2018/19. “This journey commenced quite some time ago, back when I was representing India at the U19 level. It was essential for me to excel in death overs if I aspired to play for the national team—performing well in these moments would enhance my chances,” he explained.
“Initially, my experience in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy was limited, but I soon realized the unique challenges presented in the death overs—with batters aggressively targeting bowlers. This insight motivated me to improve my skills in this area,” he added.
Prior to joining the PBKS camp, Thakur dedicated time to training at the NCA club in Nagpur, focusing on perfecting his yorkers by repeatedly practicing on the blockhole. He also concentrated on wide yorkers and slower deliveries, alongside 1.5 to 2 hours of batting drills. “In line with my bowling strategy, I work on my thought process, execution, and specific deliveries to ensure I am well-prepared for the IPL,” he remarked.
This preparation is crucial for his approach during the death overs on match days, where instinct and tactical planning for individual batters must coexist under immense pressure. “Execution is paramount in the death overs. You must evaluate whether your strategies are being implemented effectively. Additionally, planning based on the strengths and weaknesses of specific batters is vital,” he emphasized.
Thakur's experience in the India ‘A’ camp during series against Australia ‘A’, South Africa ‘A’, and the Rising Stars Asia Cup has significantly contributed to his development. “This experience brought me closer to international cricket, providing valuable lessons in skill development and performance enhancement,” he noted.
“I learned the importance of maintaining my composure and patience. Pressure mounts when you represent your country, but remaining calm allows for greater learning opportunities,” he added.
Thakur's ability to adapt his bowling strategies across different formats has further refined his versatility. “As a professional athlete, adjusting to various formats is inevitable. The game is fast-paced, shifting from T20 to Test cricket and then one-day formats. Quick adaptability has become essential for all players,” he explained.
Since 2025, Thakur believes that a cultural transformation led by captain Shreyas Iyer and head coach Ricky Ponting has positively impacted the team environment. “Shreyas bhai's arrival last year brought about a significant change in our team dynamics, fostering a supportive and enjoyable atmosphere. Each player is committed to contributing their best for the team, regardless of their playing status,” Thakur stated.
With a foundation built on calmness, clarity in strategy, and disciplined execution, Thakur emerges as a vital candidate for the PBKS lineup. In a tournament where mastery over the death overs can shift the game's outcome, his influence could be crucial in IPL 2026.
“I had a successful season with Vidarbha as well. My mindset remains focused on treating every match equally, with the ultimate goal of winning the trophy. We must approach this process with a positive mindset,” he concluded.
