Harare, June 19 (NationPress) Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) has unveiled a 16-member squad for the highly anticipated two-match Test series against the newly crowned ICC World Test Champions South Africa, commencing next week at the renowned Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo.
The first Test is scheduled from June 28 to July 2, followed by the second from July 6 to 10, promising an exhilarating fortnight of high-quality red-ball cricket on home turf.
Zimbabwe will be under the leadership of captain Craig Ervine as they look to capitalize on the positives from their recent tour of England, where they participated in a landmark one-off Test at Trent Bridge. Unfortunately, Richard Ngarava (lower back injury) and Ben Curran (finger fracture) are sidelined due to injuries, while Victor Nyauchi has been omitted for tactical reasons.
Uncapped pacer Kundai Matigimu receives his first Test call-up, while Prince Masvaure and Takudzwanashe Kaitano return to reinforce the top order. Leg-spinner Vincent Masekesa has also made a comeback. The pace attack is further enhanced by Trevor Gwandu, who has recovered from a groin injury that cut his England tour short.
All eyes will be on fast bowler Blessing Muzarabani, who leads the attack with renewed confidence after becoming the joint-fastest Zimbabwean to reach 50 Test wickets and joining IPL champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
In the middle-order, seasoned player Sean Williams provides stability, while rising star Brian Bennett, who hit Zimbabwe’s fastest Test century at Trent Bridge, will be eager to maintain his exceptional form against the Proteas.
With South Africa arriving in high spirits after their World Test Championship victory over Australia at Lord’s, Zimbabwe will be keen to rise to the occasion in front of their passionate home supporters in Bulawayo.
