Zimbabwe's Coach Justin Sammons on Travel Uncertainty Amid Middle East Crisis
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Mar 1 (NationPress) Zimbabwe's head coach, Justin Sammons, revealed that the team's travel arrangements are currently in a state of flux after their 2026 Men's T20 World Cup journey concluded with a five-wicket defeat against South Africa in their final Super Eights match at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.
In light of the turmoil affecting Middle Eastern cities such as Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha, Bahrain, and Kuwait, where strikes by Iranian forces have led to a complete suspension of airport operations, the Zimbabwean players and coaches were initially set to return home in three separate groups.
One of the players, Graeme Cremer, resides in Dubai with his wife Merna, an Emirates pilot, and their two children. Reports indicate that the experienced leg-spinner has been feeling quite anxious due to the ongoing strikes in Dubai.
During a mixed-zone interaction with reporters post-match, Sammons acknowledged the ambiguity surrounding their return plans, yet emphasized that the players remained focused on the game. “I really hope not. You want to believe that the focus stays on the game. However, it's likely on everyone's mind,” he expressed.
“You’re thinking about going home, but how will you get there? Those discussions are taking place in small groups, but I genuinely believe they maintained their complete focus on the game as they stepped onto the field,” he added.
When asked if there was any update regarding their travel plans, Sammons replied, “No, I haven't heard anything. When we began the match, there was no information, and it’s been all about the game since then.”
An ICC official informed IANS that match officials who will not be required for the semi-final stages could potentially utilize Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, as a layover point rather than Dubai to catch their flights back home.
“However, regarding teams like Zimbabwe and their travel arrangements, clarity is still forthcoming. The ICC's travel and logistics teams are in discussions with various stakeholders to determine safe routes for their return,” the official stated.
Zimbabwe is not the only team facing complications—Dr. Mpho Rabada, father of South Africa's leading fast bowler Kagiso Rabada, was set to travel to India for the Proteas' semi-final against New Zealand in Kolkata.
However, due to the escalating tensions in the Middle East, Dr. Rabada confirmed via his ‘X’ account that his flight to India has been canceled, and he will support the team from home. “#Iran #Israel #ICCT20WorldCup2026 My trip has been suspended due to the ongoing war in the Middle East. #PEACE&DIPLOMACY is needed. UN, where are you? In the meantime, I will cheer for SA from my couch & pray for peace,” he shared.
