Over 39,000 Consumers Transition from LPG to PNG, Adding 485,000 New Connections
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, April 19 (NationPress) In a remarkable transition towards sustainable fuel options, over 39,000 individuals have opted to relinquish their LPG connections in favor of piped natural gas (PNG), as reported by the government on Sunday.
This shift, enabled through the MYPNGD.in platform, forms part of a wider initiative aimed at ensuring enduring energy security and diminishing reliance on LPG.
The government has been actively collaborating with States and Union Territories pursuant to the Essential Commodities Act, 1955, and the LPG Control Order, 2000, to oversee supply chains and mitigate issues such as hoarding and black marketing.
States have been tasked with spearheading efforts to guarantee the steady supply of petrol, diesel, and LPG, a responsibility reiterated by the Centre through various communications and review sessions.
In order to enhance coordination, routine meetings with state officials have been conducted, including high-level assessments led by the Secretary of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas earlier in April.
During these engagements, states were instructed to release daily press updates, counter false information on social media, and ramp up enforcement campaigns with district administrations in partnership with oil marketing firms.
As part of these enforcement actions, over 2,400 raids were executed nationwide on April 18 to investigate hoarding and black marketing of LPG.
Public sector oil marketing companies have also increased their monitoring efforts, imposing sanctions on 264 LPG distributorships and suspending 67 others for non-compliance.
Simultaneously, the government is accelerating the development of city gas distribution systems to promote PNG adoption.
Since March 2026, more than 4.85 lakh PNG connections have been activated, with over 5.43 lakh new consumers applying for connections.
To further incentivize this change, city gas firms including Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL), Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL), GAIL Gas, and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) are providing benefits for both residential and commercial users.
The Centre has linked extra commercial LPG allocations to states based on their advancement in PNG expansion, with 22 States and Union Territories already reaping the rewards of this reform-oriented initiative.
Fast-tracked approvals for city gas infrastructure are being executed under a new three-month accelerated framework established by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
On the supply side, the government has assured continuous availability of natural gas for crucial sectors, maintaining 100 percent supply for domestic PNG and CNG transport.
Gas allocation to fertilizer manufacturing facilities has been raised to approximately 95 percent of their average consumption, while supply to other industrial and commercial sectors has been increased by up to 80 percent.
