Actor Abhishek Banerjee has opened up about the shifting dynamics of love, marriage, and self-contentment in contemporary India, saying the younger generation is increasingly comfortable being alone — and that this is not necessarily a cause for concern.

Speaking during the promotions of his recently released Netflix anthology 'Lust Stories 3', Banerjee reflected on how the modern generation relates to companionship and solitude. 'They're very comfortable being alone. They're comfortable playing games all alone. They're happy with themselves, and they love themselves more than probably we did when we were young. So it's a good thing,' he said.

The actor argued that the conventional life script — meeting a partner, marrying, having children, and repeating the cycle — is not an outcome of human evolution but a byproduct of the industrial revolution. 'It's a concept that someone must have brought up that you meet someone, have to get married, have to have kids, have to send them to school, have to get a job, and then have to get the kids married. I don't think it is a part of evolution; rather, it is a part of the industrial revolution. Whatever concept we are seeing these days, it is a forced concept. It is not something built into humans,' he said.

Rising Divorce Rates and Childfree Choices

Banerjee also pointed to trends he has observed among his own social circle. 'I know so many of my friends who don't have kids. You know, so many of my friends have chosen not to have kids, so it is happening,' he noted. He went further, describing India's rising divorce rate as a positive social signal. 'Divorce rates, by the way, in India are increasing. You know, which is a good sign in the society,' he concluded.

His remarks come at a time when urban India is increasingly witnessing delayed marriages, a growing childfree movement, and rising acceptance of solo living — trends that sociologists have linked to economic independence, digital connectivity, and shifting cultural values among millennials and Gen Z.
