Suvendu Adhikari hints at asset probe into TMC leader, warns 'Mr Nephew'
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Saturday, 16 May indirectly signalled a possible investigation into the assets of a company allegedly linked to a senior Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader, stopping short of naming the individual publicly. Addressing a public gathering in the Falta Assembly constituency under the Diamond Harbour subdivision in South 24 Parganas district — where repolling is scheduled for 21 May — Adhikari repeatedly referred to the unnamed leader as ‘Mr Nephew’.
The 'Mr Nephew' Warning
“Mr Nephew, I brought the detailed property list of your company from the Kolkata Municipal Corporation yesterday. The company has 24 properties in Kolkata. There is also a palace-like office at Amtala in South 24 Parganas district,” Adhikari said at the gathering. The veiled reference drew immediate attention, with political observers noting that the alias is widely understood in Bengal's political circles as pointing to a specific TMC figure, though no formal identification has been made.
RG Kar Case: Three IPS Officers Suspended
Adhikari also referenced his announcement from Friday regarding the suspension of former Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Kumar Goyal and two former deputy commissioners — Indira Mukherjee and Abhishek Gupta — in connection with the RG Kar rape and murder case of August 2024. “Already, three IPS officers have been suspended in this connection and a departmental probe has been initiated against them. Once the investigators bring out their call records and WhatsApp chats, the real wrongdoings of the previous government will surface,” he said. The RG Kar case, which triggered widespread protests across West Bengal, remains a politically charged flashpoint.
Warning to TMC's Falta Candidate
The Chief Minister issued a direct warning to Trinamool Congress candidate Jahangir Khan, contesting the Falta repoll. Adhikari cited a National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) declaration that listed 199 accused persons involved in the 2021 post-poll violence as notorious criminals, stating that Jahangir was among them. “Let the repolling be over. I will ensure proper action against him for past misdeeds as per legal provisions,” he said.
Crackdown on 2021 Post-Poll Violence Accused
Adhikari further stated that he had directed police authorities in South 24 Parganas district to compile two lists: one of victims of the 2021 post-poll violence in West Bengal, and another of those allegedly responsible for the violence. “Not a single goon will remain at home. Those who moved around freely even after torturing women will also not be spared,” he warned. This comes amid a broader political reckoning in the state following the BJP's return to power, with Adhikari positioning accountability for post-2021 violence as a central governance priority. The Falta repoll on 21 May is being watched as an early indicator of voter sentiment in the new political dispensation.
