Jammu, March 5 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah, has underscored the significant opportunities that agriculture and related sectors present in the Union Territory. He stated that initiatives like the Jammu & Kashmir Competitiveness Improvement of Agriculture and Allied Sectors Project (JKCIP) are vital in fostering a dynamic startup culture and encouraging innovative enterprises.

During the Startup Outreach Programme held on Thursday at Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SKUAST), Jammu, Abdullah shared insights about the role of the university and the Agriculture Production Department in advancing these initiatives.

The Chief Minister urged the youth to shift their mindset from being job-seekers to job-creators by seizing opportunities in innovation and entrepreneurship within agriculture and its allied fields.

Reflecting on the agricultural potential in the region, he stated, "When considering what industries to establish, agriculture stands out as a field ripe for development, particularly when assessing its success potential."

He pointed out the common misconception that Jammu and Kashmir's economy is predominantly tourism-based. "When I inform people that agriculture and horticulture contribute equally to our State Gross Domestic Product along with tourism, they are often taken aback. Many are unaware of the robustness of our agricultural ecosystem. Agriculture and allied sectors, including horticulture, fisheries, and apiculture, form a significant economic network," he explained, urging students to make informed decisions about their career paths at this crucial time.

Abdullah candidly addressed the limitations of government jobs, stating that not everyone will secure such positions. "If I were to claim that every one of you will land a government job, I would soon contradict myself," he said. "The reality is, while some will succeed, many will not. So what options do the rest have?"

He elaborated on the economic landscape, asserting that unlike regions rich in resources like coal, iron ore, or oil, Jammu and Kashmir must develop industries leveraging its existing strengths. "Our reality requires us to create industries rooted in what we already possess. Agriculture and allied activities are the most sustainable avenues for economic growth in our region," he emphasized.

The Chief Minister noted that traditional agricultural practices alone may not suffice for livelihood sustainability, advocating for a shift towards value enhancement and modern agricultural entrepreneurship. "In the past, our youth were closely tied to traditional farming. However, the unpredictability of agriculture, including weather issues and market accessibility, has led many to drift away," he remarked.

He pointed out that programs like the Holistic Agriculture Development Programme (HADP), JKCIP, and Mission YUVA aim to modernize agriculture, adding value and integrating technology into the sector. "Our agricultural land is limited, and in fact, it is diminishing compared to two or three decades ago. Thus, the challenge is to keep agriculture viable, and the solution lies in value addition, innovation, and entrepreneurship," he stated.

Using dairy production as a case in point, Abdullah highlighted the vast potential for value addition in Jammu and Kashmir. "Currently, we process only about six to seven percent of our milk. In contrast, Gujarat processes nearly ninety-three percent, generating significant value through products like paneer and khoya. Enhancing the value of milk through processing can substantially increase its worth," he noted.

He also identified opportunities in sectors such as meat production, fisheries, honey, fruits, vegetables, and floriculture.

Referring to a successful young innovator, he said, "The young girl we honored today found that flowers in our region had a shelf life of just three days. By improving packaging techniques, she extended this to fifteen days. Jammu, being a city of temples, will always have a demand for flowers. This illustrates how simple innovations can lead to significant business prospects."

Encouraging students to embrace entrepreneurship despite the fear of failure, Abdullah stressed the importance of innovation, which often comes with risks. "Success does not exclusively stem from government jobs. What you truly need is intent, a brilliant idea, and the passion to embark on meaningful endeavors. We are here to support you, whether as a government or through institutions like this university," he stated.

"Some ideas come to people even in their sleep. You may draw inspiration from entrepreneurs like Elon Musk. His rockets, worth billions, sometimes explode, yet he views these incidents not as failures but as opportunities to learn," he added.

Urging the youth to conquer their fears, CM Abdullah remarked, "Do not let the fear of failure deter you. Be more afraid of not trying. If you stumble, we will assist you in rising again. Innovate, take risks, and move forward—we are committed to helping you succeed. This is my promise to all of you."

On this occasion, the Chief Minister launched four publications and recognized two startups and two Farmers' Producer Organizations for their accomplishments.

He also inaugurated 808 new Kisan Khidmat Ghars aimed at bolstering grassroots agricultural services across Jammu and Kashmir.

State Agriculture Minister Javid Ahmed Dar, Chief Minister Advisor Nasir Aslam Wani, SKUAST-Jammu Vice-Chancellor B.N. Tripathi, and other dignitaries participated in the event, which attracted faculty, staff, entrepreneurs, industrialists, startup founders, and students from various colleges in the Jammu division.

Prior to the event, the Chief Minister toured an exhibition set up at the university, engaging with students, young entrepreneurs, and Farmers' Producer Organization representatives, while appreciating their innovative concepts and encouraging them to modernize agriculture into a vibrant, enterprise-driven sector.
