Key Takeaways
Ahmedabad, Feb 10 (NationPress) The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has officially sanctioned a revised budget of Rs 18,518 crore for the financial year 2026-27, which marks an increase of Rs 1,500 crore from the initial draft estimate of Rs 17,018 crore previously presented by the Municipal Commissioner.
The revised budget was introduced by Standing Committee chairman Devang Dani and received approval from the civic body, successfully concluding the annual budget process without contention, particularly following the retraction of a proposed slaughterhouse initiative in the Gyaspur locality.
Civic officials indicated that the revised estimates were formulated after incorporating public feedback, prioritizing essential civic services, infrastructure growth, sustainability, urban mobility, heritage preservation, and governance that centers on citizens.
Of the overall budget, Rs 11,082.85 crore is designated for developmental projects throughout the city.
Mayor Pratibha Jain highlighted that the corporation has ratified its largest budget to date, with a strong focus on the community's needs. “AMC has sanctioned a record budget exceeding Rs 18,500 crore, which is fundamentally oriented toward the citizens. The city is setting new development standards and is preparing for future global events,” she stated to reporters following the meeting.
Traffic management and decongestion are key features of the revised budget. Notable proposals include a restricted-height underpass near the Tragad crossing in the Chandlodia ward, a flyover from the Danilimda intersection to Khodiyarnagar, and an underpass at the Thaltej crossroads, covering the area between Divya Jyot School and Shilaj.
Additional underpasses are proposed close to Town Planning schemes 72 and 233 in Chandlodia. A budget allocation of Rs 50 crore has been made for the construction of new underpasses, underbridges, and overbridges at major junctions to facilitate smoother vehicular movement.
In the healthcare sector, Rs 50 crore is dedicated to establishing a Medical Institute and a Super-Speciality Hospital in the Nikol ward. To tackle persistent flooding issues during the monsoon, Rs 115 crore has been earmarked for the enhancement of the city's stormwater and drainage systems.
The budget also proposes tax relief measures, including an increase in the rebate for advance property taxpayers from 10 percent to 12 percent for those who have consistently paid in advance for the last three years.
Online property taxpayers will continue to benefit from a 15 percent rebate. Environmental and recreational projects encompass a World Park-themed garden in the North West Zone for Rs 10 crore, a bonsai garden estimated at Rs 5 crore, yoga facilities with trained instructors in 100 AMC gardens, a women’s gym in each zone, and the establishment of a dog shelter within municipal boundaries.
The road linking the YMCA Club to the S.P. Ring Road is proposed to be developed through a public-private partnership model.
The revised budget also accommodates a slight increase in special discretionary allocations for AMC committee chairpersons and deputy chairpersons.
