Ahmedabad, March 11 (NationPress) The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a 'yellow alert' for Ahmedabad in Gujarat, forecasting a significant increase in temperatures over the coming week. The thermometer is expected to soar up to 41 degrees Celsius, with heatwave-like conditions anticipated on Thursday.

The IMD's predictions indicate that from March 12 to 18, the city will experience extreme temperatures, with highs ranging from 39 to 41 degrees Celsius.

Minimum temperatures during this period are projected to stay between 22 degrees Celsius and 24 degrees Celsius.

On the first day of this forecast, temperatures are expected to peak, potentially reaching 41 degrees Celsius. Similar heatwave conditions might arise that day. In the following days, temperatures will likely hover around 39 to 40 degrees Celsius, continuing to affect the city.

In light of the forecast, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has activated its 'Heat Action Plan', implementing various measures to mitigate heat-related health risks for residents.

As part of this initiative, oral rehydration solutions (ORS) are now available at all Urban Health Centres, Community Health Centres, and Health and Wellness Centres across Ahmedabad.

ORS packets have also been distributed to anganwadi workers, and ORS counters are established at the Ahmedabad Municipal General Hospital.

This hospital has set aside specific beds for patients suffering from heatstroke.

Working alongside social and non-governmental organizations, over 350 public water points have been established throughout the city, with ongoing efforts to engage more organizations in this critical initiative.

Drinking water facilities are assured at all Ahmedabad Municipal Transport Service (AMTS) depots, while both ORS and drinking water are accessible at bus stations under the Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS).

Municipal schools have been advised to take proactive measures to safeguard students from heat exposure.

Teachers are being educated on the risks associated with heat, and a water bell system has been introduced in schools to ensure students hydrate at regular intervals of one and a half hours.

The civic body has also mandated that any construction or activities by its engineering department must pause between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. during the summer months, except under unavoidable circumstances.

All public gardens in the city will operate from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., with drinking water facilities provided at these sites.

ORS packets and drinking water supplies have also been arranged at all shelter homes.

The AMC urges residents to stay hydrated, wear light and loose clothing, and minimize outdoor activities during peak heat hours, especially between noon and 4 p.m.

Citizens are also encouraged to consume fluids such as lemon water, buttermilk, coconut water, or ORS, while avoiding beverages that can lead to dehydration.

Point of View

The measures taken by the AMC demonstrate a proactive approach to safeguarding public health. It is crucial for residents to stay informed and take necessary precautions during this heatwave.
