Ahmedabad, June 25 (NationPress) Ahmedabad is preparing to celebrate the 148th Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath, with meticulous arrangements and robust security measures in place. The Minister of State for Home, Harsh Sanghavi, participated in the traditional Netrotsav ceremony the day before the procession, performing the aarti and raising the ceremonial flag.
Sanghavi also conducted an extensive inspection of the 16-km yatra route with Gujarat DGP Vikas Sahay and Ahmedabad Police Commissioner G.S. Malik, assessing the preparations on-site. In a statement to the press, Sanghavi referred to the Rath Yatra as a significant religious occasion that embodies “discipline and unity at a mass level”.
He emphasized that, for the first time in India, Artificial Intelligence (AI) will be utilized for crowd monitoring to avert stampedes or disruptions. Drones and surveillance systems will facilitate the management of the large crowd, ensuring smooth movement and darshan for all devotees.
Security measures for the yatra include 3,500 CCTV cameras, 2,872 body-worn cameras, 240 terrace surveillance points, 25 watchtowers, and a deployment of 23,844 police personnel. The entire route has been 3D mapped for strategic planning.
This year, a total of 213 Rath Yatras are scheduled across Gujarat, with collaborative efforts between law enforcement and religious organizations ensuring tight security statewide. In Ahmedabad, police proactively sealed 484 dilapidated buildings along the route to prevent structural hazards.
These buildings have been secured with tarpaulins and barricades in collaboration with the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC).
To enhance public safety, 17 Jan Sahay Kendras (public help centers) will be established along the route. Sanghavi mentioned that over 65 children were reunited with their families last year through these centers, and similar provisions are in place this year.
The Minister also commended the dedication of the police force, highlighting community engagement initiatives such as cricket matches and women-led peace meetings.
“This yatra is not only a spiritual event but a symbol of social harmony, and our police teams have worked tirelessly to uphold that spirit,” he added.
