According to Amit Agrawal, Secretary of the Department of Telecommunications, India's approach to AI is rooted in a firm belief that innovation must go hand-in-hand with responsibility, transparency, and public trust.
Speaking at the annual gathering of telecom and digital ministers from the 11 ASEAN Member States, he reiterated India's unwavering commitment to digital collaboration with ASEAN.
Agrawal emphasized the collaborative efforts made to bridge digital gaps, enhance infrastructure, and ensure that digital transformation fosters inclusion, resilience, and economic growth.
The government official highlighted India's swift digital transformation, including extensive 4G coverage, the fastest global rollout of 5G technology, increased rural broadband access through BharatNet, and India's rise as a key manufacturing hub.
Furthermore, he pointed out the significance of Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) platforms such as Aadhaar, UPI, and DigiLocker for promoting inclusive growth and effective service delivery.
The Sanchar Saathi initiative, aimed at telecom user protection and fraud prevention, was also presented to ASEAN counterparts.
India underscored the importance of AI through the IndiaAI Mission, with a strong emphasis on safe and trustworthy technology.
India expressed its willingness to work with ASEAN on AI capacity building, establishing standards, and exploring practical use cases.
The discussion focused on critical topics aimed at enhancing regional digital cooperation, prioritizing digital inclusion and integration.
It also recognized the endorsement of the ASEAN–India Joint Statement on Advancing Digital Transformation during the 21st ASEAN-India Summit, designed to bolster collaboration on Digital Public Infrastructure, Financial Technology, Cybersecurity, AI, Capacity Building and Knowledge Sharing, and Sustainable Financing and Investment.
The member nations acknowledged advancements in implementing joint activities outlined in the ASEAN-India 2025 Digital Work Plan through capacity-building initiatives.
