New Delhi, Oct 11 (NationPress) Dario Amodei, CEO and Co-founder of the AI safety and research firm Anthropic, met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday to explore India's pivotal role in fostering responsible AI development.
This meeting follows Anthropic's recent announcement regarding the establishment of a new office in Bengaluru, set to open in 2026.
The company aims to recruit local talent and collaborate with Indian businesses, nonprofits, and startups to leverage AI in fields such as education, agriculture, and healthcare.
“Today I had a discussion with PM @narendramodi about Anthropic's expansion into India—where usage of Claude Code has surged by 5× since June. How India implements AI in crucial sectors like education, healthcare, and agriculture for over a billion individuals will significantly influence the trajectory of AI,” Amodei shared on X.
The company had previously declared its plans to extend its global footprint in India, with the Bengaluru office opening in early 2026.
“Bengaluru will be our second office in the Asia Pacific region, following Tokyo, which is set to launch in the coming months. This expansion will enable us to better serve India’s burgeoning AI ecosystem and reflects the escalating international demand we’re witnessing for Claude,” the company stated.
“India is attractive due to the wealth of technical talent and the Indian government's dedication to ensuring that the advantages of artificial intelligence permeate all areas of society, rather than being confined to specific sectors,” Amodei explained.
There is a strong synergy between the issues India is addressing and our mission as a company, from deploying AI across various languages and scenarios to establishing frameworks for responsible governance.
“India's AI ecosystem is poised to play a vital role in the global and democratic evolution of AI, and we are excited to partner with organizations in India to create pathways for scaling beneficial AI that serves everyone,” he added.
This foray into India also aligns with its ongoing investment in enhancing Claude’s capabilities in Indic languages.
“Establishing robust support for the languages and contexts most relevant to users in India will be a foundational aspect of our initiatives in the region. Claude already supports major Indic languages and will soon unveil improved performance in Hindi and nearly a dozen more languages, including Bengali, Marathi, Telugu, Tamil, Punjabi, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, and Urdu,” the company stated.
