New Delhi, Dec 19 (NationPress) Following the Lok Sabha's approval of the Viksit Bharat – Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) Bill, 2025 (VB–G RAM G Bill), Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal expressed strong support for the government on Friday. He emphasized that advancements and reforms are inherent to every welfare initiative, noting that similar transitions occurred even during the tenure of opposition parties.
Nonetheless, the Bill's approval provoked intense backlash from the Opposition, which claimed the legislation was hastily enacted without adequate debate and accused the central government of pursuing a 'dictatorial' method.
In an interview with IANS, Minister Meghwal pointed out that employment initiatives predate the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), asserting that merely renaming a scheme does not change its fundamental purpose.
"The Prime Minister has instructed that the variety of projects under these initiatives be expanded, with a heightened focus on rural infrastructure, water preservation, and security-oriented planning," he stated.
He also mentioned that disaster management in rural regions would see significant enhancements under the newly revised framework.
"In the event of disasters, village work must be strategically planned and executed. Technology is being utilized extensively, and updates are being made across the board to align with contemporary requirements. Enhancements are a standard part of all schemes, just as they were during the opposition's governance," Minister Meghwal added.
Rashtriya Janata Dal MP Manoj Kumar Jha criticized the manner of the Bill's passage.
"This is not how a Bill should be legislated, nor is this indicative of a functioning democracy. Even during the farm laws, the Union government disregarded our input. We felt powerless as the Bills were unilaterally enforced," he asserted.
Congress MP Mallu Ravi echoed similar sentiments, stating that the Congress and INDIA Bloc allies mounted significant protests against the Bill.
"We requested that the Bill be referred to the Standing Committee or a Parliamentary Committee. The government dismissed this appeal and passed it solely based on its majority. This reflects a disregard for the Opposition and an emerging trend of dictatorial governance in the nation," he argued.
Congress MP Jothimani Sennimalai also condemned the Union government, alleging that BJP MPs habitually infringe upon parliamentary privileges.
"Daily, BJP figures like Nishikant Dubey violate parliamentary decorum. Even the Home Minister (Amit Shah) has resorted to language unbecoming of Parliament's dignity," she remarked.
She further claimed that the Union government is undermining MGNREGA's right to work by omitting Mahatma Gandhi's name from the initiative.
"Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the Nation, is venerated not just in India but globally. We are elected to safeguard the rights of the people and uphold Gandhian principles. We protested against this Bill, and we take pride in advocating for those who elected us," Sennimalai concluded.
In the meantime, on Thursday, the Lok Sabha approved the VB-G RAM-G Bill via a voice vote. The legislation, which replaces MGNREGA with an augmented guarantee of 125 days of wage employment annually for rural households, was cleared despite calls for additional examination.
