New Delhi, Dec 5 (NationPress) Field Marshal Asim Munir has officially taken on the role of Pakistan's inaugural Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), a significant and newly established military position within the nation.
His appointment spans a term of five years. The President's office in Pakistan confirmed via an X post that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had recommended Munir for both Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) and CDF, which was subsequently ratified. "President Asif Ali Zardari has sanctioned the appointment of Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir as COAS alongside his role as CDF for the next five years," the president’s official X account noted.
The CDF role centralizes power over all three military branches—Army, Navy, and Air Force—and oversees the National Strategic Command, which is responsible for managing Pakistan's nuclear arsenal and missile systems. This consolidation makes Munir the most influential military figure in the country.
This development follows considerable speculation regarding Prime Minister Sharif's readiness to empower Asim Munir further. The formal announcement was anticipated on November 29, coinciding with the conclusion of Munir's three-year tenure as army chief.
The establishment of the CDF role was introduced last month via the 27th Amendment to the Constitution, aiming to streamline military leadership. This new position replaces the previously existing Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC), which has now been dissolved.
In addition, the Pakistani president has also granted a two-year extension to Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmad Babar Sidhu, effective from March 19, 2026.
Asif Ali Zardari extended his best wishes to both officers of the Pakistan Armed Forces.
Field Marshal Asim Munir, who achieved the rank of Field Marshal earlier this year, will concurrently serve as COAS while fulfilling his responsibilities as CDF. He becomes the first military leader in Pakistan's history to hold both the five-star rank of Field Marshal and the dual command of COAS and CDF. Before him, General Ayub Khan was the only other officer to attain the Field Marshal title, leading Pakistan during the 1965 conflict with India.
