Guwahati, January 25 (NationPress) - Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya emphasized the pivotal role of voters in fortifying the nation's democracy during a speech on Sunday. He remarked that active and informed participation by citizens is crucial for maintaining elections that are free, fair, and credible.

While addressing the 16th National Voters’ Day celebrations at NEDFi House in Dispur, the Governor highlighted the day as a reminder of the shared responsibility among citizens in a democratic framework.

Offering his best wishes to voters throughout Assam, he emphasized that this day represents the vitality and resilience of Indian democracy.

Acharya pointed out the historical importance of January 25, marking the establishment of the Election Commission of India in 1950, just a day prior to the enforcement of the Constitution.

He stated that the Constitution's framers envisioned the Election Commission as a robust and independent body to uphold the electoral process's integrity.

Stressing the importance of civic engagement, the Governor remarked that the Constitution embodies the essence of democracy, while voters represent its backbone.

An informed, responsible, and engaged electorate, he noted, strengthens democratic institutions and ensures accountability.

He further elaborated that the annual observance of National Voters’ Day, initiated in 2011, aims to raise awareness about voting rights and inspire broader participation, particularly among new voters.

Describing the right to vote as a powerful instrument of democracy, Acharya stated that even a single vote can significantly impact the nation's current and future landscape.

He warned that not voting dilutes the collective voice of the populace, while thoughtful participation enhances democracy and influences governance.

Referring to this year's theme, “My India, My Vote,” the Governor indicated it symbolizes both the entitlement and duty of citizens in a democratic setting.

He encouraged individuals not only to exercise their right to vote but also to inspire others, especially first-time voters, whom he considered essential for the future of democracy in the country.

Quoting a message from Prime Minister Narendra Modi directed at new voters from his 'Mann Ki Baat', Acharya conveyed that a first vote signifies self-respect and dedication to the nation, urging young voters to make informed choices.

The Governor also acknowledged the increasing participation of women, seniors, individuals with disabilities, and marginalized communities, stating that this reflects the inclusive and mature essence of Indian democracy.

He praised the Election Commission of India for its role in conducting elections in the world's largest democracy with integrity and transparency, and emphasized the necessity of accurate electoral rolls and ongoing voter awareness efforts.

The event saw attendance from the Chief Electoral Officer of Assam Anurag Goyal, senior district officials, election icons, members of Election Literacy Clubs, and elderly voters.
