Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Srinagar, March 27 (NationPress) A significant snow avalanche occurred on Friday along the Srinagar-Leh highway on the Ladakh side of Zojila Pass, trapping multiple vehicles. Fortunately, officials confirmed that there were no reported fatalities from this incident.
The avalanche hit the highway in the early hours on the Ladakh side of Zojila Pass.
Although numerous passenger vehicles were caught in the debris, officials stated that no casualties resulted from the incident.
As a result of the avalanche, the highway has been rendered impassable, prompting the initiation of rescue and clearance efforts to remove debris and restore traffic.
The Srinagar-Leh Highway (NH-1, previously NH-1D) is a vital two-lane, 434-km road linking Srinagar to Leh in Ladakh. Renowned for its stunning high-altitude vistas, the highway traverses the 11,575-ft-high Zojila Pass.
A tunnel is currently under construction beneath the Zojila Pass.
Once completed, this tunnel will ensure safe, all-weather connectivity between the Union Territory of Ladakh and the rest of India.
The construction project will connect Sonamarg in the Ganderbal district of Jammu and Kashmir with Drass in the Kargil district of Ladakh through a horseshoe-shaped, single-tube, two-lane road tunnel that measures 9.5 meters in width, 7.57 meters in height, and spans 14.2 km at an altitude of approximately 12,000 feet above sea level.
This project, alongside the already operational Z-Morh Tunnel, is strategically significant for the Srinagar-Leh highway, set to provide year-round, weather-resistant connectivity to the Ladakh region, enhance tourism and the economy, and improve logistics for the Indian Armed Forces.
This tunnel is one of 31 road tunnels (20 in Jammu and Kashmir and 11 in Ladakh) being constructed at an estimated total cost of Rs 1.4 lakh crore (around $17.5 billion). Upon completion, it will hold the title of the longest tunnel in Asia.
