Srinagar, Jan 28 (NationPress) Two-way traffic on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway was reinstated on Wednesday, along with the resumption of flight operations from the Srinagar International Airport after a one-day suspension, according to officials.

Passenger vehicles are now permitted to travel in both directions on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44), as confirmed by Traffic Department authorities.

“Commuters are urged to maintain lane discipline; overtaking and driving in the wrong lane could lead to traffic congestion. Please stay informed through the traffic police's X handle and ignore false rumors,” an official advised.

Additionally, flight operations have recommenced at Srinagar International Airport following their suspension on Tuesday.

The closure of the Srinagar-Jammu highway left numerous vehicles stranded at various points along the nearly 300-km stretch.

The Srinagar-Leh highway and the Mughal Road, which connects the Valley to the Jammu division, remain closed due to heavy snowfall on the Zojila Pass leading to Ladakh and on Pir Ki Gali along the Mughal Road.

The Sinthan Pass, linking Anantnag district in the Valley with Kishtwar district in Jammu, as well as the Razdan Pass connecting Bandipora to the Gurez border town, are also currently closed.

Snow removal operations are actively underway across the Valley, with five Public Works Department officials suspended for failing to meet snow clearance responsibilities.

While power has been restored in Srinagar city, many rural regions in Kashmir are still without electricity.

Ground crews from the Power Development Department have been working diligently to restore power in remote areas affected by heavy snowfall and fallen tree branches on transmission lines.

The district administration in Ganderbal has issued an avalanche warning for higher elevations, advising residents in those regions to refrain from unnecessary travel during snowstorms.

Point of View

I believe that the swift restoration of traffic and flight operations is a positive development for the region. However, the ongoing weather challenges highlight the need for improved infrastructure and preparedness to ensure safety and accessibility for all residents and travelers in Kashmir.
