All Flights to Kashmir Halted Amid Heavy Snowfall; Train Services Resume

Srinagar, Dec 28 (NationPress) The Kashmir valley experienced heavy snowfall on Friday, with intermittent snow and rain affecting J&K throughout the day. As a result, all flights to and from Srinagar International Airport were cancelled, while train services to the valley were resumed in the afternoon.

Officials at Srinagar Airport reported that continuous snowfall combined with extremely low visibility led to the cancellation of all flights.

Train services to the valley resumed in the afternoon after railway personnel successfully restored the tracks.

The Srinagar-Jammu national highway remained closed as numerous vehicles were trapped between the Pir Panjal tunnel and Srinagar city.

Authorities worked tirelessly throughout the day to clear stranded vehicles and provide assistance to tourists and others stuck on the highway.

Senior officials, including the district magistrates of Kulgam and Anantnag, oversaw relief and restoration efforts, while the SSPs of these districts spent the day on the road with police officers helping to move stranded vehicles and attending to the needs of travelers.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah convened meetings with senior officials to expedite the restoration of electric power, clear roadways, and ensure readiness at medical facilities for emergencies caused by the heavy snowfall.

The district administration across all areas in the Kashmir valley deployed snow clearance machines to restore connectivity between districts and their respective towns.

Despite its challenges, the snowfall has been beneficial as J&K had been enduring a four-month-long dry spell.

Significant snowfall in the mountains has replenished the essential water reservoirs in J&K, which support various rivers, streams, springs, lakes, and other water bodies during the summer months.
