Should India and Bangladesh Strengthen Their Ties?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Dhaka, Feb 13 (NationPress) The bond between India and Bangladesh must be rooted in mutual respect, equality, and national interest, with bilateral ties not reliant on any single individual or political party, stated Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, the first Hindu elected from the Dhaka constituency, in an interview with IANS.
"India is our nearest neighbour, and it is crucial to foster positive relations with those nearby. Additionally, we also aim to build strong ties with global partners like the United States and the European Union. Both India and Bangladesh are independent nations deserving equal respect, irrespective of size or wealth. Bilateral relations should not hinge on any specific leader or political faction; they ought to focus on the people of both nations. History illustrates that ties remain intact regardless of the ruling party. Our relationship must stay stable, constructive, and centered on shared interests," Roy emphasized.
According to the latest election results released on Friday, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has secured 209 out of 299 seats, while the radical Jamaat-e-Islami party obtained 68 seats.
Since the exit of the Awami League government led by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in August 2024, Bangladesh has seen ongoing assaults on minority groups, particularly Hindus.
However, Roy maintained that communal harmony in Bangladesh remains robust, as individuals of diverse faiths coexist and celebrate festivals such as Puja and Eid together.
"I prefer not to categorize people as minorities or majorities; we are all Bangladeshis, born on the same land. No one is inferior or superior based on their religion. The challenges faced by the poor and marginalized are alike, regardless of whether they are Muslim, Hindu, or belong to another community. If we effectively apply the rule of law and ensure practical justice, everyone will be safeguarded. Justice and security must be guaranteed equally for all citizens," he told IANS.
"The priorities for the Hindu community are identical to those of every community: education, healthcare, security, social protection, and religious freedom. Every citizen holds the right to live and practice their faith freely. Rights and opportunities should not differentiate between Muslims and Hindus," Roy added.
On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with BNP chairman Tarique Rehman, congratulating him on his party's success in the Bangladesh elections. He also conveyed India's support for Rehman's efforts to achieve the aspirations of the Bangladeshi people.
Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, while conversing with IANS, praised PM Modi's gesture.
"I commend Prime Minister Modi for embracing the democratic process and acknowledging the elected government. Congratulating the winning party is standard diplomatic conduct, reflecting political culture and mutual respect. We value this gesture," he remarked.
He noted that the BNP is primarily focused on delivering on its promises to the people of Bangladesh.
"We have made 31 commitments to the populace. Post government formation, it is our duty to gradually execute these reforms. These reforms encompass various sectors like education, health, sports, culture, development, law, justice, and the rule of law. We have numerous programs lined up, but I believe that not everything can be accomplished in a day, a week, or even a month. We need to implement them incrementally and prove our dedication. It is an immense task, but we are resolved to achieve it."
