New Delhi, Feb 18 (NationPress) The relationship between India and Bangladesh is experiencing a significant shift following the substantial victory of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). Prime Minister Modi was among the first to extend his congratulations to Tarique Rahman for his remarkable win.

PM Modi also sent a letter to Rahman alongside Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, who was present at the swearing-in ceremony. India has also made efforts to connect with the second-largest political party, Jamaat-e-Islami. India’s foreign secretary, Vikram Misri, delivered his best wishes to Shafiqur Rahman, the party leader, while reiterating India's unwavering support for Bangladesh.

The Jamaat chief acknowledged the profound civilizational ties between India and Bangladesh and expressed optimism for enhanced bilateral relations. Officials note that tensions have existed between the two nations since the removal of Sheikh Hasina, with relations deteriorating further under the interim government led by Mohammad Yunus.

Nonetheless, India recognizes the necessity of fostering positive relations with its neighbors and aims to initiate a new chapter. Given Bangladesh’s significance in trade and security, maintaining amicable ties is increasingly crucial.

India perceives the BNP as a more moderate partner and is optimistic about collaborating closely with Dhaka. The annual bilateral trade between India and Bangladesh stands at approximately $10 billion, emphasizing the importance of favorable relations. Bangladesh is also aware of this and is likely to strive for improved connections with New Delhi.

Another official highlighted that the safety of Hindus in Bangladesh remains a top priority. Under Yunus, Hindus faced violent attacks, and numerous individuals were imprisoned. India will advocate for the swift release of these detainees and seek assurances regarding the safety of Hindus in Bangladesh, along with the restoration of damaged temples.

An official from the Intelligence Bureau noted that security is a critical concern, with both nations’ security agencies collaborating to prevent Bangladesh from becoming a base for Pakistan-backed terrorists. Indian agencies are vigilantly monitoring Pakistani activities within India.

Recently, groups like the Rohingya Solidarity Organisation (RSO) and Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) have received support from the ISI. Furthermore, the ISI is attempting to unite these groups with entities such as Al-Qaeda in the Subcontinent (AQIS) and Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB). Surveillance over radicalization camps near the border areas is ongoing.

Reports indicate that these camps host numerous Rohingya refugees, whom the ISI sees as potential recruits. Both nations must address this issue carefully, as it poses a risk not only to India but also to Bangladesh, according to Intelligence Bureau officials.

Pakistan is closely monitoring New Delhi's outreach efforts following the BNP's victory. Islamabad may attempt to undermine the bilateral relations between the two nations. If they perceive Rahman as not complying with their interests, the ISI could instigate violence to destabilize the BNP government. Rahman currently faces significant challenges related to internal security and the economy. Having garnered the electorate's hope, he will strive not to disappoint them, officials suggest.

Observers of Bangladesh politics view the BNP's victory as a favorable development for India-Bangladesh relations. However, the path forward is expected to be challenging due to Pakistan's involvement. The ISI will likely make every effort to disrupt relations between New Delhi and Dhaka. Experts advise that India should proceed cautiously to ensure the restoration of complete ties with Bangladesh.
