Key Takeaways
Dhaka, Feb 17 (NationPress) Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla landed in Bangladesh on Tuesday to represent the Indian government during the swearing-in event of the newly elected government in Dhaka.
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), led by its chairman Tarique Rahman, achieved a significant victory in the recent parliamentary elections.
On Tuesday, the BNP Parliamentary Party chose Tarique Rahman as its Leader, positioning him to become the Leader of the House and take the oath as the nation's Prime Minister later that day. Being the party with the most seats, the BNP formed the Parliamentary Party and held its first meeting, presided over by Tarique Rahman, after all 208 MPs took their oaths at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.
Joining Om Birla were several foreign dignitaries, including Bhutan's Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay and Pakistan's Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal.
Moreover, Nepal's Foreign Minister Bala Nanda Sharma and Sri Lanka's Health Minister Nalinda Jayatissa are also expected to attend the ceremony.
The United Kingdom's Indo-Pacific Under-Secretary Seema Malhotra is also anticipated to be present, alongside the possibility of Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu attending the event.
On Sunday, India's Ministry of External Affairs announced that Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla would participate in the oath-taking ceremony for the Tarique Rahman-led government in Bangladesh.
The MEA emphasized, "The Hon'ble Speaker's attendance at this pivotal event highlights the profound and lasting friendship between the peoples of India and Bangladesh, reaffirming India's unwavering commitment to the democratic principles that unite our nations."
Additionally, it stated, "As neighboring countries bonded by a common history, culture, and mutual respect, India welcomes the transition of Bangladesh to an elected government under the leadership of Tarique Rahman, whose vision and values received overwhelming popular support."
The 13th parliamentary elections occurred on February 12, with the Election Commission releasing the official notification of the elected candidates on the evening of February 13.
The elections covered 299 out of 300 seats in the 13th parliamentary election. The Election Commission announced unofficial results for 297 constituencies, but notifications for Chattogram-2 and Chattogram-4 remain pending due to a High Court directive.
Based on the results so far, the BNP secured 209 out of 297 seats, with its candidates leading in the two constituencies where results are still pending. Their allies have claimed three seats.
In contrast, Jamaat-e-Islami won 68 seats, while the partners in the Jamaat-led 11-party coalition obtained nine seats. Islami Andolan Bangladesh (IAB) won one seat, and independent candidates triumphed in seven constituencies, as reported by Prothom Alo.
With Tarique Rahman poised to lead Bangladesh, a nation that hasn't had a male Prime Minister in almost 35 years, experts warn of significant challenges ahead, including addressing unrest and rising Islamist extremism that characterized the 18-month tenure of the Mohammad Yunus-led interim government.
