Kolkata, Aug 18 (NationPress) The anticipated march to the School Service Commission's (SSC) office in the Salt Lake area of Kolkata, organized by members of the unemployed qualified teachers' forum, was thwarted on Monday due to the police's earlier detention of its convenor, Suman Biswas.
Biswas had announced a march aimed at demanding the placement of teachers affected by the SSC recruitment scandal and the provision of fresh job opportunities for qualified, unemployed youth in the state.
On social media, Biswas declared that the march to SSC Bhaban would take place on August 18. He also communicated this intent via email to the Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate. However, the police denied permission for the march.
On the previous day, law enforcement suggested that the march's organizers were planning to incite violence and potentially use petrol bombs against the police.
On Monday morning, officers from the Chandannagar Police Commissionerate apprehended Biswas at Adisaptagram station in Hooghly district while he was en route to Kolkata to lead the demonstration.
Additionally, the Chinsurah Police Station conducted a search of Biswas's residence in the Bandel area of Hooghly district early Monday, with his family claiming that police presence was notable from the early hours. Despite this, Biswas had left home much earlier, fearing an arrest.
Later, he was detained at Adisaptagram station.
Suman's brother, Sanjay Biswas, informed the media, "I just learned that my elder brother was traveling from Adisaptagram station to the protest site in Kolkata. The police arrived and detained him without allowing him to speak or informing him of his destination."
Biswas was eventually released on Monday evening with no charges filed against him.
The Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate had claimed that a violent uprising was planned for Kolkata by the organization's members. They asserted that they received an audio recording from a phone conversation between job seekers, indicating intentions to create chaos by deploying petrol bombs and socket bombs against the police under the guise of a march.
Subsequently, the police released the audio clip, claiming that the individuals involved have been identified and appropriate measures would be taken against them.
On Monday, a man named Rezaul Karim was arrested by Murshidabad police in the Jalangi area of Murshidabad district, identified as one of the individuals in the audio recording.
The police faced significant criticism for detaining Biswas and arresting Rezaul Karim. In a Chief Judicial Court located in the Bidhannagar area, the police were reprimanded, and the judge granted bail to Karim after the police failed to substantiate their claims against him.
