Kolkata, Sep 15 (NationPress) The Regional Meteorological Centre located in Alipore has predicted that light to moderate rain will persist in Kolkata and the southern districts of Bengal until Wednesday.
While the monsoon is retreating in some regions of the country, it remains active in Bengal, continuing the rainfall. The forecast indicates that several districts in north Bengal may also experience heavy rain.
A senior meteorological official noted, “The monsoon has retreated from parts of western Rajasthan as of Sunday, three days earlier than the typical schedule of September 17. A low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal, near the coasts of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha, has shifted towards Telangana, diminishing its influence on Bengal. Nevertheless, light to moderate rain will still be scattered across south Bengal.”
Moreover, a cyclonic circulation over northeastern Bangladesh—extending from 3.1 km to 5.8 km above sea level—is pulling moisture from the Bay of Bengal. This situation is likely to result in thunderstorms across both northern and southern Bengal.
Most southern districts, including Kolkata, are expected to experience intermittent rain over the upcoming days. Heavy showers are anticipated in Purulia, West Burdwan, Bankura, Birbhum, and Murshidabad starting Monday, with thunderstorms possible in other areas.
Heavy rainfall is forecast for north Bengal over the next three to four days. Particularly intense rain is expected in Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar, prompting the issuance of an orange alert. Darjeeling, Kalimpong, and Cooch Behar will also likely receive significant rainfall, while North Dinajpur may face similar weather from Monday. However, no heavy rain is anticipated for South Dinajpur and Malda.
On Sunday, Kolkata recorded a maximum temperature of 32.2 degrees Celsius, which is 0.6 degrees below normal, and a minimum of 28.1 degrees Celsius, 1.7 degrees above normal. The relative humidity fluctuated between 97 percent and 76 percent.
