Bhopal Administration Enacts SOP to Address Fuel Shortage Fears
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bhopal, March 26 (NationPress) In response to rampant speculation about a fuel shortage that has led to panic buying and extensive lines at petrol stations, the Bhopal district authorities have implemented a detailed Standard Operating Procedure aimed at restoring order and assuring residents that fuel availability is sufficient.
Bhopal District Collector Kaushalendra Vikram Singh issued a directive on Thursday evening, emphasizing that false and unfounded information is currently being disseminated. These baseless rumours are causing unnecessary anxiety among the public, resulting in potential overcrowding at fuel stations and straining law and order.
“We have mandated the enforcement of the Standard Operating Procedure under the powers granted by the Essential Commodities Act of 1955 and the Indian Civil Defence Code to ensure a steady supply of essential goods in the district, uphold public tranquility, and prevent the spread of falsehoods,” the directive stated.
The authorities confirmed that there is no genuine shortage of petrol, diesel, or liquefied petroleum gas within the district or throughout Madhya Pradesh.
It was noted that the recent surge at fuel stations was entirely fueled by misleading information shared on social media and messaging platforms.
Relevant departments have been instructed to monitor social media for false claims and to swiftly act against those perpetuating misinformation.
Legal measures, including filing First Information Reports, may be initiated against individuals responsible for inciting panic.
“Administrators of WhatsApp groups will be held accountable for disseminating misleading information and could face charges under Section 553 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita and the Information Technology Act,” the directive mentioned.
The administration has also cautioned against the practice of filling fuel in containers like cans or bottles, except under controlled conditions, to avert stockpiling.
Collector Kaushalendra Vikram Singh urged the public to stay calm and not succumb to misinformation.
He reiterated that fuel reserves are more than adequate to satisfy demand, and the situation is completely under control.
This action was prompted by the noticeable increase in crowds at petrol stations across Madhya Pradesh, including Bhopal, over the past three days due to a troubling scenario unfolding in West Asia.
