Tensions Rise Within Bihar Opposition Ahead of Rajya Sabha Elections
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Patna, Feb 24 (NationPress) A conflict has emerged within the Opposition coalition in Bihar regarding the forthcoming Rajya Sabha elections for five seats, revealing significant divisions among the partners even prior to the announcement of candidates.
On Monday, RJD MLA Bhai Virendra endorsed Hena Shahab as a candidate for the Rajya Sabha from the Grand Alliance.
In response, Akhtarul Iman, the state president and MLA of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), expressed his dissatisfaction when questioned about AIMIM's support for an RJD candidate.
He retorted that this time the RJD ought to back the AIMIM instead.
“Why should we back the RJD? They should support us this time,” Akhtarul Iman stated, while also accusing the media of bias.
He highlighted that AIMIM currently has no representation in the Rajya Sabha and hinted that the party might even consider nominating a Dalit candidate.
His comments emphasize AIMIM’s determination to negotiate firmly within the Opposition Bloc.
On Tuesday, Bhai Virendra reiterated his push for a Muslim representative from the RJD to be nominated to the Upper House, proposing the name of Hena Shahab, spouse of the late MP Mohammad Shahabuddin.
Reaffirming his viewpoint, Bhai Virendra insisted that a minority candidate — specifically Hena Shahab — should be the choice this time.
“I firmly believe that only a minority name should be sent to the Rajya Sabha, and Hena Shahab is the ideal candidate,” Bhai Virendra declared.
To secure one Rajya Sabha seat, a candidate requires the backing of 41 MLAs.
The NDA, with 202 MLAs, is in a strong position to claim four out of five seats.
Conversely, the Grand Alliance of the Opposition has only 35 MLAs, making it challenging to win a seat without AIMIM's support.
If the five AIMIM MLAs and one BSP MLA join forces with the Grand Alliance, the Opposition could potentially secure the fifth seat, positioning AIMIM as a pivotal player.
While the RJD has yet to officially announce a candidate, Bhai Virendra — who has proposed Hena Shahab’s name — is regarded as being close to both Lalu Prasad Yadav and Tejashwi Yadav, adding political weight to the proposal.
Hena Shahab’s late husband, Mohammad Shahabuddin, continues to wield influence among segments of the Muslim community. Their son, Osama Shahab, is an RJD MLA representing Raghunathpur in Siwan.
Meanwhile, NDA allies have also started to assert their claims.
Parties led by Upendra Kushwaha, particularly the Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM), have laid claim to a Rajya Sabha seat.
Party patron and Union Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi mentioned that the NDA leadership had previously assured HAM of two Lok Sabha seats and one Rajya Sabha seat.
“We were promised two Lok Sabha and one Rajya Sabha seat. We will see how this unfolds. I believe our leadership will honor its commitment,” Manjhi commented.
As alliances fray and negotiations escalate, the contest for the fifth Rajya Sabha seat in Bihar is shaping up to be as much about political strategy as it is about solidarity among competing factions.
