Bhubaneswar, Nov 6 (NationPress) The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has formally requested the Odisha Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), R.S. Gopalan, to implement essential and sufficient security measures for the Leader of Opposition (LoP) and former Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik during his upcoming campaign events in support of the party and its MLA candidate, Snehangini Chhuria, in Nuapada on Friday. This request comes amid concerns over potential disruptions by certain BJP leaders and supporters.
A BJD delegation, which included Rajya Sabha MP Sulata Deo and senior leader Lenin Mohanty, has submitted a formal appeal to the Odisha CEO highlighting these security concerns.
“We are worried that specific BJP leaders and their supporters may attempt to create chaos, engage in stone pelting, or carry out violent acts during his visit. Therefore, we urge that proper security measures are put in place to ensure his safety and the smooth execution of the campaign,” the BJD stated in their formal appeal.
According to party sources, BJD President Naveen Patnaik is set to hold two roadshows in Nuapada and Khariar Notified Area Councils, along with a public meeting at Parkod in Nuapada district on Friday.
Furthermore, the opposition group also lodged a complaint with the Odisha CEO regarding claims of traffic obstruction and illegal road blockades for the BJP election campaign led by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi in the Nuapada Assembly constituency supporting the ruling party's candidate, Jay Dholakia, on Thursday.
The delegation alerted the CEO about a serious instance of public disturbance and violation of election regulations by the BJP and its affiliates within the Nuapada Assembly constituency, who obstructed the main road in Komna block by setting up a stage for an election campaign event featuring CM Majhi, candidate Dholakia, and other notable BJP figures on Thursday.
This obstruction reportedly caused significant traffic congestion, disrupting the daily commutes of local residents, students, workers, and small business owners, while also hindering goods transportation.
“We respectfully urge your office to promptly intervene, instruct local administration and police to clear the obstruction, maintain free access on public roads, initiate appropriate action against offenders under the Motor Vehicles Act and Model Code of Conduct, and ensure strict compliance with lawful and impartial procedures during election campaigning,” the delegation emphasized.
