Why is the BJP Questioning Bengal Police's Notice to 'X'?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Feb 11 (NationPress) The BJP on Wednesday expressed skepticism regarding the reasoning behind a notice dispatched by the West Bengal Police to the office of the social media platform X, which requests the removal of specific posts on the micro-blogging site related to a conversation involving a Trinamool Congress MP.
The BJP’s IT Cell head and the party’s Central Observer for West Bengal, Amit Malviya, shared the notice directed to the chief compliance officer of X from the Cyber Crime Wing of the West Bengal Police on his official social media account on Wednesday morning.
Curiously, the notice sent to X did not specify the name of the Trinamool Congress MP, nor was it mentioned in Malviya's detailed post regarding the issue.
In his statement, Malviya highlighted that the notice requesting the suppression of posts that contained conversations between a Trinamool Congress MP and another individual acknowledged by the state police that the issue pertains to a “non-consensual sharing of private intimate chats of a sitting Member of Parliament.”
This wording implicitly validates the authenticity of the chats, contradicting the claims made in the FIR lodged against social media users asserting that the chats were fabricated. Malviya raised significant questions: Why were citizens targeted and threatened through legal action based on the alleged 'fake' nature of these chats? Was the FIR hastily filed? And who was directing these actions?
Malviya noted that this situation could have profound legal implications, particularly as it has emerged that the petitioners hold documented proof confirming the legitimacy of the conversations.
“The latest communication from the police reinforces their stance. The Krishnanagar Police need to clarify whether their actions were taken independently or under political coercion. Both the implicated MP and the DGP of West Bengal must justify these actions in court. The rule of law cannot be selectively enforced. If state resources were misappropriated to protect political interests while targeting citizens, accountability is essential,” Malviya concluded.
