Kolkata, July 10 (NationPress) A fierce exchange of words erupted on the social media platform X between the BJP's Information Technology Chief, Amit Malviya, and the Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, regarding the alleged eviction and mistreatment of Bengali-speaking migrant workers at Delhi's Jai Hind Colony.
Earlier that day, Malviya released a statement via his official X account, asserting that misinformation was circulating about political motivations behind the actions at Jai Hind Colony.
He maintained that the actions taken were in accordance with a court ruling, not political maneuvering.
"The enforcement action is rooted in a court order -- not in political agendas. The settlement in question is illegal, and the law is merely being upheld. It is noteworthy that just days ago, 26 illegal Bangladeshi nationals were apprehended in this very vicinity," Malviya stated.
He further criticized Chief Minister Banerjee for equating legitimate residents of West Bengal with illegal immigrants from Bangladesh, who have entered India using fraudulent AADHAR and ration cards, primarily issued in 24 North Parganas.
"These illegal migrants vote for the Trinamool Congress, facilitating the party's persistence in power -- ensuring the cycle of infiltration and appeasement continues. Stop belittling Bengal. Stop endorsing illegality," he asserted in his X post.
Shortly after Malviya's statement was posted, CM Banerjee responded with a strongly worded post on her official X account, expressing her profound concern over reports of harassment from the Jai Hind Colony in New Delhi's Vasant Kunj, a settlement predominantly occupied by Bengalis.
"Their water supply was reportedly halted on orders from the BJP-led government. Electricity meters were confiscated, and power was abruptly cut two days ago. Residents also allege that the Delhi Police, supported by Rapid Action Force personnel, obstructed privately arranged water tankers that they had paid for. A forced eviction is currently taking place despite the matter being sub-judice following another incident last December involving the Delhi Police. How can we call ourselves a democratic Republic if the fundamental rights to shelter, water, and electricity are being violated?" the Chief Minister's statement emphasized.
She also claimed that while migrant workers from other states are welcomed in West Bengal, those from West Bengal are subjected to harassment in BJP-ruled regions, where Bengalis are labeled as infiltrators in their own homeland.
"Speaking Bengali does not make one a Bangladeshi. These individuals are as much citizens of India as anyone else, irrespective of the language they speak."
She accused the BJP of leading an "anti-Bengali" agenda after being rejected by voters in West Bengal during recent elections.
"Worrying reports have surfaced from Gujarat, Maharashtra, Odisha, and Madhya Pradesh, where Bengali-speaking individuals are facing targeted oppression. Now, this wave of hostility has even reached the national capital," the Chief Minister asserted.
