Telangana BJP Leader Under House Arrest Amid Protests Against Congress
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Hyderabad, April 18 (NationPress) - On Saturday, the Telangana Police enforced house arrest on the President of the State Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), N. Ramchander Rao, following the party's announcement of a protest against the Congress party. This protest was triggered by the recent failure of the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill in the Lok Sabha, which occurred just a day prior.
The NDA is set to initiate a nationwide protest campaign today targeting the Opposition INDIA bloc regarding this matter.
BJP leaders have indicated that demonstrations will take place at district headquarters across the nation, spearheaded by the BJP Mahila Morcha.
This campaign aims to underscore what the NDA claims is an "anti-women agenda" promoted by the Opposition, while also seeking to rally public support on this critical issue.
In a statement to IANS, State BJP Chief Ramchander Rao remarked, "The women of the country have been betrayed by Congress, and for that, we have decided to demonstrate outside the Congress office. Today, multiple groups of our party planned to protest outside the residence of Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy. However, the police arrived at my home this morning and placed me under house arrest to inhibit my participation in this event."
Criticizing the ruling Congress government, Rao stated, "We denounce the Congress party's undemocratic behavior in arresting me and obstructing our right to protest."
He further claimed, "The INDIA bloc is anti-women; they have committed significant injustices against women. This represents a defeat for women due to the political games played by the INDIA bloc parties."
On the previous Friday, the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026, which sought to ensure 33 percent reservation for women in Parliament, was defeated in the Lok Sabha.
The Bill did not garner the necessary two-thirds majority, leading to heightened political tensions between the ruling NDA and the Opposition INDIA bloc.
Despite a lengthy debate, the proposed legislation, which also aimed to increase the House's size, received only 298 votes in favor and 230 against, falling short of the constitutional threshold for passage.
Consequently, the Centre opted not to advance two associated Bills on Delimitation, asserting that the three Bills should not be viewed in isolation.
The Bill's defeat has sparked intense political conflict, with the NDA accusing the Opposition INDIA bloc of intentionally obstructing a historic reform aimed at enhancing women's representation in legislative bodies.
In response, the Opposition has raised concerns about linking the Women's Reservation Bill to the expansion of Parliament based on the 2011 Census and the delimitation process.
Earlier on Friday, floor leaders from the ruling NDA convened for an urgent meeting in Parliament following the Bill's defeat.
During this meeting, it was decided that NDA members would address the Opposition's resistance to women's empowerment, according to sources.
This message will be communicated to the public nationwide through protests, press briefings, and social media to raise awareness of these developments.
