Telangana BJP Leader N. Ramchander Rao Arrested During Assembly Protest
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Hyderabad, March 23 (NationPress) Authorities detained Telangana BJP chief N. Ramchander Rao along with other party leaders and activists on Monday as they attempted to advance towards the Assembly to urge the Congress government to fulfill its electoral commitments.
The police intervened at multiple locations to obstruct the planned march to the Assembly.
The state BJP had called for a siege of the Assembly, citing the government's failure to deliver on six key guarantees and other election promises.
With BJP flags in hand and chanting anti-government slogans, party leaders and members attempted to move towards the Assembly but were stopped and taken into custody by law enforcement. Ramchander Rao was subsequently transported to the Panjagutta Police Station.
In a show of support, several BJP leaders visited the police station to stand in solidarity with Ramchander Rao.
Expressing his outrage over the detentions, Ramchander Rao stated that the current situation reflects not 'Praja Palana' (people's rule) but rather an echo of the 'Indiramma Rajyam' of 1975.
“The Congress party has once again revealed its anti-democratic tendencies by attempting to stifle dissent and silence opposition. I was detained for opposing the betrayal and deceit that the Congress government has inflicted on the citizens of Telangana with its false promises. The public has reached their limit,” he shared on ‘X’.
Rao asserted that protest cannot be silenced through intimidation. “It is utterly disgraceful that the Congress government, having completely disregarded its commitments to the public, is retaliating against opposition parties questioning its failures with unlawful arrests,” he added, emphasizing that the BJP will not be cowed by such threats.
“These arrests will only fortify our determination to fight for our cause. Our just struggle—focused on addressing public concerns and holding the Congress accountable for its betrayal—will persist unyieldingly,” he continued.
Additionally, Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar condemned the arrest of Ramchander Rao and fellow BJP members.
He described the incident as a blatant act of political revenge. “Is advocating for democratic protest regarding the six guarantees now considered a crime in Telangana? After 27 months in power, the Congress has yet to fulfill its promises. Instead of delivering, the government is burdening the state with debt while showing no intention of upholding its commitments,” he stated.
He called for the immediate and unconditional release of Ramchander Rao and his associates, warning that failure to do so would lead the BJP to escalate its protests statewide. “The public is being taken for granted, but we will continue to hold Congress accountable until the six guarantees are realized,” he concluded.
