Bhubaneswar, Sep 22 (NationPress) The president of BJP Odisha, Manmohan Samal, expressed his enthusiastic support for the launch of the Centre’s “Next Generation GST Reform” on Monday, calling it a remarkable gift for the younger generation and for those striving towards a developed India.
During a press briefing held at the state party headquarters, Samal conveyed his appreciation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on behalf of the people of Odisha.
He remarked that the implementation of these GST reforms across the nation, including Odisha starting September 22, is expected to not only lower tax rates but also herald a transformative change in the everyday lives of citizens.
“With the decline in prices of essential goods, the financial burden on the poor and middle-class families will ease. The combined income tax relief and GST exemptions within a year represent a dual benefit from our double-engine government,” Samal stated.
He emphasized that this significant economic reform prioritizes the needs of the poor, lower-middle-class, and middle-class citizens, aiming to fulfill the vision of a developed India (Viksit Bharat).
According to the Odisha BJP chief, this groundbreaking initiative will uplift every segment of society by enhancing their economic standing.
He noted that the reforms serve not only as a festive present ahead of Dussehra and Diwali, as promised by PM Modi from the Red Fort, but also as a pivotal transformative measure designed to fortify India’s economic framework.
On September 3, during the 56th GST Council meeting, the “Next Generation GST Reform” was unanimously adopted by all states.
He mentioned that nearly 99% of products under the 12% GST category have been reduced to 5%, and around 90% of goods previously taxed at 28% are now being taxed at 18%.
“This will result in lower household expenses, reduced costs of essential commodities, increased savings for consumers, and a boost in domestic demand. The reforms will provide significant relief to the poor, farmers, middle-class families, and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises,” Samal added.
Furthermore, agricultural equipment, irrigation machinery, and small tractors will now be subject to just 5% GST, lowering costs for farmers.
Simultaneously, health and life insurance, along with critical medications, including cancer drugs, are fully exempt from GST.
Samal pointed out that Odisha stands to gain substantially in sectors such as agriculture, handloom, tourism, and coal due to these GST reforms.
The reduction of GST on textiles from 18% to 5% will benefit countless weavers, while the elimination of cess on coal is expected to boost state revenue.
He concluded that the GST 2.0 reforms will create new opportunities for the youth of Odisha, enhance domestic demand, and accelerate the ambition of building a developed India by 2047.
He remarked that GST 2.0 showcases Prime Minister Modi’s commitment to economic reforms, highlighting several accomplishments of the BJP government under his leadership.
