New Delhi, June 2 (NationPress) The BJP asserted its dominance in the elections held on Monday for the Municipal Corporation of Delhi's (MCD) chairmen and deputy chairmen across 12 ward committees, along with the election of two standing committee members from the South Zone and City-SP Zone.
Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva celebrated the success of BJP candidates, who secured chairmanship in 8 out of the 12 ward committees, as a definitive indication of the Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) decline.
“The results from today’s elections for the ward committees and the standing committee of the MCD clearly show that the AAP has lost not only public support but is also facing a mass exodus of its elected representatives and party officials,” stated Sachdeva.
He noted that BJP's victories in eight zones, including South Delhi, coupled with an additional win in the standing committee elections and the deputy chairmanship in the Rohini zone, reflect growing discontent among AAP’s municipal councillors towards their leadership.
Sachdeva expressed optimism regarding the BJP's prospects in the upcoming election for the eleventh member of the Standing Committee, scheduled for Tuesday.
“Following that, we will organize the election for the Chairman of the Standing Committee to revitalize the municipal administration and resume stalled development projects,” he remarked.
The necessity for the election of the two standing committee members arose after Prem Chauhan and Punardeep Singh Sawhney were elected as members of the Delhi Legislative Assembly in February.
While the BJP has strengthened its control over the civic body with previous elections resulting in the appointment of its nominees as Mayor and Deputy Mayor, the AAP has struggled to maintain its majority.
The AAP faced a significant blow on May 17 when 15 municipal councillors, originally elected on AAP's ticket, resigned from the party and announced the formation of a new political entity, the Indraprastha Vikas Party.
This new coalition, led by Hemchand Goel, features notable former AAP leaders including Mukesh Goel, Himani Jain, Devindra Kumar, Rajesh Kumar Ladi, Suman Anil Rana, Dinesh Bhardwaj, Runakshi Sharma, Manisha, Sahib Kumar, Rakhi Yadav, Usha Sharma, and Ashok Pandey playing pivotal roles in the rebellion.
The exit of Mukesh Goel from AAP was perceived as a significant political loss for Kejriwal’s party, given his previous role as the Leader of the House for the party in the municipal assembly.
