BJP daydreaming about Telangana, says minister Ponnam Prabhakar
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Telangana Transport and Backward Classes Welfare Minister Ponnam Prabhakar on Monday, 4 May declared that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has no political future in Telangana, dismissing the party's stated ambition to capture the state as "daydreaming." His remarks came in response to BJP leaders who claimed that after their expected victory in West Bengal, Telangana would be the saffron party's next electoral target.
Prabhakar's Rebuttal to BJP's Telangana Ambitions
Speaking to media persons in Hyderabad, the Congress leader argued that the people of Telangana would never extend trust to those who, according to him, had spoken disparagingly about the state's formation and bifurcation. "They are daydreaming," Prabhakar said bluntly, referring to BJP's stated expansion plans.
The minister also invoked Dr B.R. Ambedkar's Constitution in a broader political argument, claiming that as long as the Constitution remains intact, the BJP's vision of a Congress-free India would remain unfulfilled. "The Congress party, which has been the platform for democracies, will return to power in the country once again. The BJP thinks that doing politics in the name of religion under the guise of division is eternal. Democracy will undoubtedly triumph," he said.
Congress Leaders React to Kerala Election Results
Prabhakar also congratulated veteran Congress leaders V.D. Satheesan, Ramesh Chennithala, and K.C. Venugopal on what he described as a resounding Congress victory in Kerala. He attributed the win to the leadership of Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge.
"The Congress party has never taken shortcuts for the sake of power. Win or lose, in the democratic system, we remain with the people. The people of the country will bring the Congress party back to power to protect democracy," Prabhakar added.
Sridhar Babu on Constitutional Values and 2029 Outlook
Telangana Industry and Information Technology Minister D. Sridhar Babu echoed these sentiments, stating that the state election results had sent a clear message across Indian politics. He described the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) alliance's performance in Kerala as a reflection of voters' faith in democracy and a rejection of what he termed divisive politics.
"The Congress party, whether in power or not, has always stood for constitutional values. The strong performance in Kerala reflects that commitment. I commend the dedication of Congress workers and thank every voter who placed their trust in us," Sridhar Babu said.
The minister expressed confidence that the Congress would secure a second consecutive term in Telangana under Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, adding that the party remained committed to fulfilling its promises "in a phased and transparent manner." He also pointed to building momentum ahead of the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.
Political Context
This comes amid a broader post-election commentary cycle following assembly election results in multiple states. The BJP's stated ambition to expand into southern India — particularly Telangana, where it currently sits in opposition — has drawn consistent pushback from the ruling Congress government. Notably, the Congress wrested Telangana from the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) in the 2023 assembly elections, and its leaders have been keen to project stability and electoral confidence ahead of future polls.
