BJP Challenges Trinamool's Claims on West Bengal Companies
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, March 24 (NationPress) On Tuesday, the BJP vehemently dismissed the assertions made by the Trinamool Congress regarding the situation of companies operating in West Bengal. Amit Malviya, the Chief of the BJP’s Information Technology Cell and the party's central observer for West Bengal, highlighted statistics provided by the Union Ministry of Corporate Affairs to the Rajya Sabha, refuting the Trinamool Congress's earlier claim that there were 2,54,000 registered companies in the state, which they touted as evidence of industrial growth.
In response, Malviya pointed out that the actual number of active companies in West Bengal is only 1,54,575, with 78,615 companies being struck off (indicating they are inactive) and an additional 1,016 companies currently undergoing liquidation. This implies that merely 61% of the originally registered 2,54,000 companies are still operational.
“TMC counts graves as growth. Among the 1,54,575 ‘active’ companies, merely 1,782 reported profits exceeding Rs 10 crore in the financial year 2024-25. This reflects the true industrial landscape that Mamata Banerjee has nurtured,” Malviya asserted.
The BJP has consistently raised concerns over the perceived outflow of capital from West Bengal. Before assuming the role of state president of the BJP in West Bengal, Samik Bhattacharya, while serving as a Rajya Sabha member, presented data from the Union Ministry of Corporate Affairs indicating that 2,227 companies relocated their operations from West Bengal to other states between 2019 and 2024, with 39 of them listed on the Mumbai Stock Exchange.
The BJP's state unit, referencing the Union Ministry's data, suggested that reasons for this migration include operational flexibility, efficient management, lower administrative costs, and improved infrastructure.
