Bengal Elections: BJP Set to Gain, But TMC Stays Secure
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, May 15 (NationPress) The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is regarded as the most significant challenge to the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government led by Mamata Banerjee. An upcoming opinion poll by IANS-Matrize suggests that while the BJP is poised to make gains in the forthcoming elections, it will likely fall short of toppling the current administration.
Despite a noticeable anti-incumbency sentiment, the Mamata administration is expected to secure a fourth consecutive term. The same opinion poll indicates that the TMC is projected to achieve a vote share of approximately 43-45%, which could translate to 155-170 seats in the 292-member Assembly, with the majority threshold being 148.
The BJP-led NDA is forecasted to enhance its performance compared to the 2021 Assembly elections, aiming for victory in 100-115 constituencies. However, this still means they will not dislodge the ruling TMC from power.
According to the IANS-Matrize Opinion poll, the NDA is anticipated to garner a 41-43% vote share, leading to wins in around 100-115 seats. This represents a significant improvement over the 2021 polls, where the NDA managed only 38% of the vote and secured 77 seats.
In summary, the survey indicates that while the BJP-led NDA is likely to boost its vote share and public support, the TMC is expected to narrowly retain its grip on power in this fiercely contested election.
Earlier, during the announcement of the election schedule, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar addressed the TMC's last-minute electoral promises, which included settling dues for government employees and increasing honorariums for religious leaders.
“States are permitted to implement any policy decisions just before the model code of conduct becomes effective. The code is now in operation,” the CEC stated.
The West Bengal Assembly elections will occur in two phases on April 23 and 29, with results to be announced on May 4.
