Kolkata, March 28 (NationPress) BJP leader Dilip Ghosh criticized West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday, suggesting that she should have anticipated the protests she encountered during her presentation at Kellogg College, Oxford University, given that the world is informed about the circumstances in the state.
His comments followed an incident where a faction of students interrupted Banerjee's speech, voicing concerns regarding post-election violence in West Bengal and the recent rape case at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
In an interview with IANS, Ghosh stated, "I previously warned Mamata Banerjee that if she plans to travel abroad, she must be prepared, especially concerning the crimes against women and the issue of minors being married off. I mentioned that she would need to provide answers for this. When questioned, she appeared distressed—she lacks a response."
He emphasized that the global community is aware of the conditions in Bengal.
"The world is conscious of what is unfolding in Bengal. Prominent individuals from here are residing overseas... If such events occur, you must be ready to respond. What will transpire if you become agitated?" he queried.
The Chief Minister had been invited to address the audience at Kellogg College on the social advancement of women, children, and marginalized groups.
During her talk, she presented welfare initiatives like 'Swasthya Saathi' and 'Kanyashree'. However, when she began discussing the industrial scenario in West Bengal and investments in Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), a group of demonstrators from the back rose with placards concerning post-election violence and the RG Kar rape incident.
The demonstrators attempted to disrupt the gathering by shouting during her remarks. Nevertheless, Banerjee maintained her composure and finished her speech without additional interruptions.
In reaction to the protests, she addressed the demonstrators, saying, "Advise your party to strengthen its presence in our state (West Bengal) so they can contend with us."
Amidst the altercation, the Trinamool Congress leader also displayed an old photograph from the early 1990s, showing herself with a bandaged head, claiming it as evidence of an assassination attempt against her during her opposition days.
