New Delhi, Sep 19 (NationPress) BJP leader Dilip Ghosh has strongly condemned West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for her alleged inaction regarding student safety and the ongoing delay in conducting campus elections across the state.

In an interview with IANS, Ghosh expressed that student voices are being ignored under Mamata Banerjee’s administration. He stated, “Across colleges and schools, incidents are occurring where girls face sexual harassment. There are allegations implicating teachers and members of the Trinamool Congress party. Consequently, parents are apprehensive about sending their children to educational institutions. The Mamata government remains silent, and police are failing to file FIRs regarding these issues,” he claimed.

The backlash stems from the indefinite postponement of student council elections at higher education institutions in the state, which have been suspended for more than six years, even predating the Covid-19 pandemic of 2020. Various student organizations, including those at Jadavpur University, have protested, demanding the reinstatement of democratic elections on campuses. Up until now, there has been no official timeline for resuming these elections.

The call for elections has gained renewed urgency following the alarming Kasba Law College gang-rape incident, which has raised serious safety concerns among students and parents alike.

Ghosh escalated his critique by highlighting the increasing lawlessness in the state. “MLAs from Mamata Banerjee’s party are frightened of the populace. During the Durga Puja festival, they travel abroad where they have financial interests. Numerous incidents are occurring, yet TMC leaders are absent, even amid teachers' protests or escalating public discontent,” he remarked.

In response to the mounting pressure from student groups, Education Minister Bratya Basu recently stated that preparations for student council elections could commence after the upcoming festive season. His comments were made during a Trinamool Chhatra Parishad event.

Additionally, the West Bengal government is under scrutiny following multiple crimes against women, including the Kasba gang-rape case, where three suspects were apprehended. The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken notice of the situation, while opposition figures are amplifying their demands for justice and accountability.
