Kolkata, July 7 (NationPress) The residences of three female BJP activists were attacked in the Dinhata region of Cooch Behar district, West Bengal, just one day after an incident involving the state's Leader of the Opposition, Suvendu Adhikari, whose convoy faced violence, leading to the arrest of seven Trinamool Congress members.
On Thursday, the homes of BJP workers Juthika Barman, Maina Barman, and Purabi Barman were vandalized, forcing them to flee. The BJP has accused Trinamool supporters and criminals of orchestrating this attack.
Abhijit Barman, the BJP’s Cooch Behar organizational district president, informed the media that this latest incident was a retaliatory measure following the apprehension of Trinamool Congress workers on Wednesday, who were implicated in the attack on the Leader of the Opposition's convoy earlier in the week.
“Members of the ruling party have been terrorizing our activists and perpetrating violence against them. Previously, they faced assaults for speaking out against the intimidation imposed by the ruling party's affiliates. Today, the residences of three of our female workers were destroyed. One of them, a pregnant woman, has been hospitalized for treatment. We will be filing a report with the police shortly,” Barman stated.
Archana Majumdar, a member of the National Commission for Women (NCW), also responded to the assault on the women BJP workers.
“I just received a distress call from Smt. Juthika Barman, a Rajbanshi Hindu woman and public representative from Dinhata, Cooch Behar. She was previously forced out of her residence by ruling party thugs, returned after intervention from @NCWIndia, and now her home is under siege again. This is a form of political terrorism. How long will the state remain passive?” said Dr. Majumdar on her social media account.
In relation to the attack on the Leader of the Opposition's convoy in Cooch Behar town, seven individuals have been detained. Adhikari's convoy was targeted upon his arrival for a pre-scheduled protest rally.
Adhikari, along with 65 other party legislators, was slated to march through Cooch Behar town towards the district police superintendent's office to submit a memorandum regarding the recent assaults on elected BJP officials in the area.
Following the incident, Adhikari's attorney lodged a complaint with Cooch Behar SP Dyutiman Bhattacharya via email against 41 individuals, including Udayan Guha, the state's North Bengal Development Minister.
BJP President J.P. Nadda has also condemned the attack on Adhikari’s convoy, stating that it is not merely an assault on an elected official but an assault on democracy itself.
“Mamata Banerjee must be held accountable for promoting a culture of lawlessness and political violence,” Nadda remarked.
